Margaret “Peggy” H.  MacLeod

MacLeod, Margaret "Peggy" Macleod, Margaret “Peg” Peg MacLeod died peacefully on May 29 at age 87, having lived with Alzheimer’s Disease for many years.  To the very end she remained sweet, appreciative, strong in her faith, and loving towards everyone.   Born in New York City, she was the only child of her Scottish immigrant parents, John and Ethel Clark.  She met her husband, Angus “Mac” MacLeod, on a blind date; when he asked her to marry him two weeks later her response was, “What took you so long?”  They were completely devoted to each other until his death in 1985. After marrying, they moved to Grand Rapids where Mac attended Calvin Seminary, and then to New Jersey where he pastored a church before moving to Argentina to work in missions.  In 1966 they moved to Chicago, to Ada in 1974, and to Holland, MI, in 1983 where they continued their pastoral work in Christian Reformed churches.  Following her husband’s death Peg moved to Bradenton, FL, and then back to Grand Rapids in 1999.  During that time she served as a translator on multiple service trips to the Dominican Republic, and traveled to Bangladesh, Senegal, Honduras, Scotland and Argentina. She loved music.  Nicknamed “Legs” for her long legs and her love of dancing everything from jitterbug to tango, she also sang in choirs, played guitar, was an accomplished pianist and served as church organist.  A fabulous cook, she also enjoyed biking, bridge games, baseball, Scrabble, and camping.  She was proud of having worked as Executive Secretary for the vice-president at Pan Am in New York, but more proud of partnering with her husband in church work, hosting social gatherings, leading women’s groups, and visiting shut-ins. Peg is survived by her two daughters, Peggy (Peter) Vander Meulen and Christine (Forry) Anderson, four grandchildren, Sean, Michael, Nicole Vander Meulen, Jennifer (Steve) Klein, and one great-grandson, Tyler Klein.  She will be missed by her close friends from Argentina - Nat Bosscher, Ed & Wilma Meyer, Ray & Glady Brinks – by many dear friends at Ada CRC, and others too numerous to mention. Peg will be buried in Bradenton, FL., next to her husband.  A celebration of Peg’s life will be held at Church of the Servant CRC, 3835 Burton St. SE, on Friday June 27.  There will be an informal time to gather for conversation, remembrances and refreshments 3:30 – 4:30 pm, followed by a memorial service at 4:30 pm.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Gerontology Network, 500 Cherry St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503, in thanks for the wonderful care they provided Peg during the years she attended their CareTree senior center.

Peggy, family members and close friends of Mrs. MacLeod I am so sorry for your loss. I just finished reading her brief life story and thought "what a full and glorious life to celebrate on June 27." More importantly though I thought about what an amazing blessing Peg was to her family, friends and all those who were influenced by her work. The legacy she leaves through all of you is a testament to God's grace and love. Faye Richardso-Green

I am so sorry to hear this Peggy, but it sounds like she passed very peacefully. Mothers hold special places in our hearts and it is so hard to lose them no matter what age. Linda Quist
