Margaret Lena Sweetman, age 92, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, September 5, 2015, after just having celebrated her 92nd birthday with her family. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Teunis Sweetman; daughters, Rosalyce “Sally” and Nancy; sister, Gertrude DeVries; brothers, Louis Tazelaar and Henry Tazelaar. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Merlin Vis; her children, Ronald and Judy Sweetman, Leonard and Cindy Sweetman, Kenneth Sweetman; stepchildren, Marijo and Rollan Van Egmond, David Vis; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Ronald Jr. and April Sweetman (Charles, Stacy), Reynell and Alex DeLange (Alex Jr., Aaron), Jody and Andy Bluml (Jon, Joelle), Kevin Walburg (Alex, Ethan, Josie); 4 great great grandchildren; sisters, Minnie and Henry Ipema, Alice Vander Veen; brothers-in-law, Leonard Sweetman, Neale and Winifred Sweetman; many nieces and nephews. Margaret and her first husband were married and raised 5 children together. Teunis passed away at a young age. Margaret went back to college and received her teaching degree from Calvin College. She taught at Calvin Christian for 20 years. In her retirement, she was involved in the Bible League, a volunteer in the pediatric section of Butterworth Hospital, worked as a poll inspector and chairperson on Election Day, a volunteer at Crossroads Bible Institute and served as secretary on the board of Leisure Acres Complex. She was also a Key Lady, a library volunteer, a coffee server for many years and she served three terms as a PCA at Neland Church. A special thank you to the entire staff at Spectrum Health Medical Group Home Based Primary Care for their attentiveness in mother’s care these past 8 months. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday 1 pm at Neland Avenue Christian Reformed Church, 940 Neland Ave. SE, Grand Rapids. Interment Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Relatives and friends may meet the family Monday from 5-8 pm at Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW and on Tuesday from 12-12:45 pm at church prior to the service. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Calvin Christian Education Foundation or Crossroads Bible Institute.
