Lyle Franklin Shaw, age 84, of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 17, 2016. He was born July 8, 1931 to Alyse (DeGroot) and Lyle F. Shaw in Muskegon, MI. He was educated in the Muskegon Heights Public Schools, Western Michigan University and Northwestern University. Lyle married June Schmidt on January 20, 1951. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Lyle worked for General Electric and Ford Motor Company where he served as Controller of the St. Paul, MN assembly plant among various assignments. He was named Vice President for Business Affairs at Lake Superior State University in 1967 and served there until 1977 when he was named Vice President for Finance and Administration and Treasurer of the Board of Control at Northern Michigan University where he retired as Vice President Emeritus. Lyle was instrumental in building modern, computerized financial systems in both institutions, and the construction of many buildings, most notably the Superior Dome in Marquette, MI. Lyle participated in church activities having served as deacon, reader and in numerous other capacities. He served in the Rotary Club (Paul Harris Fellow), Lions Club (Melvin Jones Award), and Chamber of Commerce (President and Director). Upon retirement, he volunteered at the Rescue Mission, delivering hot meals to shut-ins, Gulf Coast Hospital in Panama, City, FL, where he was honored with the Frist “Volunteer of the Year” award, and Hackley Hospital in Muskegon, MI. He will be dearly missed by his wife, June; son, Timothy; daughter, Julie (William) Shaw Zukowski; grandchildren, Zachary, and Alexandra Shaw; sister, Dr. Necia (Duncan) Black; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Craig (Suzanne) Schmidt, Doreen (William) Hulka, Emogene Cotal, Linda (Preston) Helms; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Allison Shaw; parents; brother, Gerald; parents-in-law, Henry and Marie Schmidt; sister-in-law, Helen (Terry) Wright. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 23 at 11:00 AM at Covenant Village of the Great Lakes Fellowship Hall, 2510 Lake Michigan Dr NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504. Interment Mona View Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family Saturday from 10-11 AM at Covenant Village prior to the service. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Christian Rest Home.
