Remembering Lyle E. Converse
Lyle E. Converse, age 89 of Wyoming, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus surrounded by his family on Saturday, October 14, 2017. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of nearly 66 years, Madelyn; his parents, Alethea Schmieding and Roscoe Converse; stepfather, Edwin Arkins; brother, Donald (Josephine) Converse; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Larson, Carl Smith and James Fouts; and sisters-in-law, Shirley Rassmussen and Jackie Converse. He is survived by his children, Debbie (Scott) Crooks, Gregg (Marsha) Converse, Kay (Barry) Popma, Tricia (Jamie) Weaver; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sister, Viola Smith; brother, Byron Converse; brother-in-law, Charles Rasmussen; sisters-in-law, Helena Larson and Janet Fouts; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to acknowledge and thank Lyle’s close friend, Donna Will of Montague, for her loving support of Lyle and his entire family. Lyle was a devoted Catholic and faithful member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church from its inception on Clyde Park Ave. Lyle was just as active in the City of Wyoming. He served on several city boards and the Chamber of Commerce for more than 45 years, recently resigning from the city’s Officers Compensation Commission. He was recognized for his many contributions to the City with a proclamation from the City Council on September 18, 2017. Following his discharge from the Army having served in Japan during the occupation in World War II, he attended and graduated from Davenport College. In 1949, he was hired by Earl Robson as store manager at Earl Robson Department Store eventually becoming owner. He remained there until the store closed in 1993. Lyle instilled faith driven principles and values in his family. He had a winning smile and easy going demeanor that encouraged people and brought them to trust his judgment as evidenced by his church and community activities. A memorial service for Lyle will be held on Saturday, October 28, at 11:00 am at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 4101 Clyde Park Ave. SW, with Fr. Mike Alber and Fr. Phil Shangraw concelebrating. Relatives and friends may meet the family on Friday from 4-7 pm at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4031 Clyde Park SW, Wyoming, and on Saturday at the church one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
