Linda Elaine Meriwether Harber of Gaines Township, Michigan died Aug. 30, 2020 from complications of angiosarcoma.
Lin was born on August 23, 1945 in Flint Michigan. She started her career as a bookkeeper there, earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from Grand Valley State University and eventually became a partner in a CPA firm. Even after she could have retired, she continued to take care of her clients at Corey, Murphy and Harber, PLC. Lin’s savvy encouraged and inspired others, particularly uplifting other businesswomen.
Though private, she was a true beauty, putting others at ease with her elegant presence and kind words, making everyone she encountered the most important person in the room. She was absolutely selfless, never shied away from hard work and undertook what she could to make the lives of everyone around her easier. Her community volunteering was widespread and among others, included service to the Wyoming Chamber of Commerce and the Kentwood Community Church, where she attended for 30 years. She was especially proud to belong to the Meriwether Society, a hereditary genealogical organization, receiving the group’s Distinguished Member award in 2003.
Alongside the love of her life, husband Michael DeJonge, she traveled the world, but her favorite was a quiet visit to Treasure Island, Florida with Mike. Much of her travel was to visit family or family related places, but she enjoyed the beauty of everywhere she went.
Lin was preceded in death by her parents, William Eugene Meriwether in 1974 and Mildred Christine Harber in 1993, and her sister, Sharon Marlene Nelson, in 1986. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her stepchildren, David and Sue DeJonge of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Melissa and Dale Olmsted of Richmond, Kentucky; a niece, Lesa Johnson and her husband, Eric Fink, of Williamston, Michigan; a nephew, Wendall Christopher and Elizabeth Delong of St. Clair Shores, Michigan; and four grandchildren, Sara, Autumn and Summer Olmsted and Grace DeJonge.
In accordance with her wishes, a private family gathering will take place in lieu of a funeral. Her cremated remains will be interred at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Holland, Michigan.
Memorial donations may be made to Spectrum Health Foundation, 100 Michigan St. NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
