March 25, 2022

Les DeVries, age 84, of Kentwood, formerly of Grand Haven, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, March 25, 2022. Les was a loving husband, dad, grandpa and a “grandpa-great” who treasured his family. Les was a lifelong educator teaching science at Newaygo and Mona Shores Public High School, and West Michigan Christian High School. He took great joy in mentoring children about science and ecosystems on the Grand Valley Water Research Boat (DJ Angus) in Grand Haven for many years. Les served his Lord with his time and talents in various ways. He was a Chaplain at MacCallum Chapel which was an outreach chapel of Trinity Christian Reformed Church in Fremont. He volunteered with Gideons International and served at the Christian Reformed Conference Grounds keeping the grounds beautiful. Les enjoyed the outdoors, manicuring his gardens and fishing on Lake Michigan. He was also the resident handyman, who could usually figure anything out for his family and friends. Above all, his love for his family and his faith in Jesus will be forever remembered. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Donna (Huizenga) DeVries; his children, Jan and Roger Van Spronsen of California, Bob and Tricia DeVries of Minnesota, Joan and Mark Tanis of Caledonia; grandchildren, Joy and Kirk Bernal, Kimi and Daniel Nahigian, Stephen and Niki VanSpronsen, Rachel and David Benedict, Peter and Katelyn DeVries, Leslie Tanis, Jacob Tanis, Alyson Tanis; 5 great-grandchildren plus one soon to arrive; brothers and sister-in-law, Warren DeVries, Paul and Alma DeVries; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Eunice and Harv Gemmen, Wanda Lenderink, Jim and MaryJo Huizenga, Paul Huizenga, Sally and Ray Beerhorst; several loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2022 at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4646 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, Kentwood, with Pastors David Zuidema and his son-in-law, Roger Van Spronsen, officiating. Live streaming of the service can be viewed at www.mkdfuneralhome.com by clicking the “Live Streams and Recordings” link at the top right corner of the page. Burial will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Relatives and friends may meet the family at the funeral home on Saturday from 10-11a.m. prior to the service. Dear Donna and Family, Les was a wonderful man. Our loved ones leave behind spaces in the world that can never be filled. But they also leave behind love and light in each of us, sparks of joy and hope that live in our hearts and give strength to our souls. Les was my supervisor for student teaching. I learned a lot from him and loved working with him. We hope that time will bring peace and that memories will bring comfort. In His Love, Beth and Bill Maschewske

Dear Donna, Jan, Bob, and Joan, My heart is with all of you today as you say your final goodbyes. Uncle Les was a wonderful human being and I know you will all miss him mightily. May you cherish all the wonderful memories that you made throughout so many years. I truly tried to be with you all today but tested positive for Covid and am quarantined in a hotel in Quito, Ecuador. Luckily, Dave was also positive and we have super mild symptoms so we're in it together. I look forward to seeing you sometime in the near future. Blessings to you all.
