Kevin Dougherty

March 3, 1965 ~ October 2, 2020

Kevin Gerard Dougherty entered Fisherman’s Paradise on October 3, 2020, setting his hook on a record-breaking largemouth bass and topping off his first day in heaven with a round of golf.

Kevin taught every kid who wanted to learn how to bait a hook, cast a line, and reel in their first fish.  He shared his love and knowledge of hunting with anyone who wanted to learn.  If you needed a quick fix on your golf swing, he was there patiently guiding you with perfect pointers every time.  His patience, calm nature, and sound advice were present in everything he did and were his hallmark as a lawyer.

He was born on March 4, 1965 in Chicago, Illinois to Anne C. and Robert E. Dougherty.  While he lived half his childhood in Chicago, it was certainly his formative years in Southern Indiana living near Salem, Indiana that strengthened his love for fishing, hunting and being outdoors.  Kevin graduated from Salem High School in 1983.  Taking after his father in his love of golf, he played on his high school and college golf teams (Franklin College, B.A. 1987), and subsequently graduated from law school (Indiana University, J.D. 1990).  From there, he moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan and joined the law firm of Warner, Norcross & Judd in 1990 where he remained his entire career and served as a litigator primarily in the areas of products liability, business disputes and family law.  He served as a board member for the Legal Aid of Western Michigan for several years, as well as heading the pro bono program for Warner.

Kevin was a natural storyteller.  He could deliver a perfect toast for any occasion on a moment’s notice.  He was a loyal friend who always looked out for your best interests.  He loved I.U. basketball.  But above all, Kevin cherished being a father and was his children’s #1 fan in all their pursuits.

His father preceded him in death.  Kevin is survived by his wife, Michelene Pattee; his children, Sean, Madeline and Claire; his mother; his sisters, Maureen (Rick) Davidoff, Chris Dougherty, Sheila (Toby) Harmon; and many nieces and nephews.  A private celebration of his life will be held.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Legal Aid of Western Michigan.
