Van Ess, Kenneth Jay Kenneth Jay Van Ess, age 74, of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 18, 2014 with family and friends by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Elizabeth “Betty” Van Ess; sister, Carol Van Ess-Lang; brother, James Van Ess. Ken retired from Columbian Distribution after 34 years of faithful service. He was a loving and giving husband, father and grandfather that adored his family. He had a passion for gardening and working in his yard. Ken was always content and appreciated the simple things in life. He especially loved his walks enjoying creation and nature around him. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 54 years, Ruth; their children, David Van Ess, Kenneth Van Ess; grandchildren, Kirk Van Ess, Lisa Van Ess, Justin Bradford; great grandson, Tyler Van Ess; brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Pat Van Ess, Bill and Marge Van Ess; sister and brother-in-law, Barb and Duane Den Hof; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Barbara Van Ess, Jack Teegardin; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Friday 11 am at Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW. with Pastor Dennis Gilbert officiating. Interment Rest Lawn Memorial Park. Relatives and friends may meet the family Thursday from 5-8 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to the American Heart Association.
