Karen Nielsen

Karen Nielsen, “KK” a beloved member of the Wyoming, Michigan community, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 20, 2024, after a courageous 18-month battle with Pancreatic Cancer. 

Karen was born on November 17, 1953, and attended Waverly High School, graduating in 1973. She enjoyed being home with her children and was later employed at Jeld-Wen and Enviro Clean.

Karen was actively involved in the Deaf Community in the greater Grand Rapids area as well as throughout the state.  She volunteered her time helping local Deaf teen clubs and was an active member of the West Michigan Association of the Deaf.

Karen had a zest for life and her favorite saying was “No Problem!” In her words, she was “busy, busy” and always on the go similar to the “Roadrunner".  She enjoyed many hobbies, including Deaf socials, family gatherings, camping, kayaking, fishing, deer/morel hunting, softball, many card games, and painting. She always had a smile on her face, a hat on her head and a warm heart for those around her.

Karen is survived by her partner, Linda Lopez; Karen’s two children, Karla Sarver (Jon) and Mike Karpinski (Kristyn). She also leaves behind eight grandchildren, Alex (Hunter), Cassandra, Lilly, Mason, Aubree, Cooper, Parker, Michael; sister, Sandra (Rick) Casey and her family Neil (Jenna) and children, and Nicole (Cody) Giles.  She was preceded in death by Roman Karpinski, father of her children, Betty Gauthier, former partner as well as her parents Mogens and Virginia Nielsen. 

Karen “KK” will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her spirit will live on in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to have her in their lives.

Funeral services will be held 3 pm Saturday, August 24 at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4646 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, Kentwood.  Relatives and friends may meet the family Saturday from 12-3 pm at the funeral home prior to the service.
