Judith Quiñones Bandas

Judith Quiñones Bandas, age 97, of San German, Puerto Rico and Kentwood, Michigan, went home to be with Our Lord on Sunday, July 21, 2024.  She was a beloved member of her Church and community in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  She learned the art of baking cakes from scratch and later ran her own baking business.  She was actively involved in raising her grandchildren, her nephews Wilfredo and Hector, and was a caregiver to her mother and mother-in-law.  

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ismael Rodriguez Bonilla; step-children: Ismael Rodriguez, Aida M. Rodriguez;  her parents and many siblings.

She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters: Maria Judith (Nicholas) Rodriguez-Martyak, Iraida Rodriguez; grandchildren: R. Christian Rivera, Maria Elena Martyak, Nick (Kristen) Martyak, Adriana Valle-Rodriguez; step-grandchildren: Carlitos, Annette (Fredy), Jannine (Renė), Sharon (Eric), Javier (Debbie), Ismael (Waliria) and Vanessa; great granddaughter, Mya Grace Martyak; her beloved dog, Cuddles; siblings: Gladys, Wilfredo (Sheila) and Ramon; many nieces, nephews, cousins and many other “family” that she raised or cared for in a special way.

Relatives and friends may meet the family for a viewing on Saturday, July 27, 2024, from 2-3 p.m. at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4646 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, Kentwood.  Religious funeral services will immediately follow at 3 p.m.  at the Funeral Home, with Rev. She would never have imagined it, that a jibarita born in the Ancones neighborhood of San Germán, Puerto Rico in 1927. The world was approaching the Depression of the 30’s when Judith Quiñones Bandas grew up as a result of the union of Rosa Bandas and Antonio Quiñones, known in the neighborhood as Toño León. She grew up in San Germán where she lived until shortly after graduating from the Lola Rodríguez de Tio High School with honors in Home Economics. After finishing high school, she embarks on an adventure to find her future. One of her older brothers, in solidarity, conspired with some aunts to take her secretly from her father to the train station. And so, with a ticket to San Juan, she moved away from the town where she was born, "La Ciudad de Las Lomas" and moved with her older sister Margarita’s home, who already lived with her spouse in Barrio Obrero, Santurce. There she began working at a department store, González Padín, in Old San Juan. Working there, and looking across the windows, she met the handsome gentleman, Don Ismael Rodríguez Bonilla, who was working at the RCA Victor store right across the street from González Padín. The magic of love did its thing and Don Ismael was captivated by her big black eyes and her tiny figure. They fell in love and got married on February 4, 1955. From this act of magic that we call love, two beautiful offspring were born: Maria Judith (Udy) and Iraida (Illy). They established their residence in Las Lomas in Río Piedras and Ismael's eldest children, Ismael Jr. (Tato) and Aida Milagros (Tata), who Judith assumed as her own and finished raising them from their early adolescence, came to complete the family nucleus. Judith continued to work at González Padín until she decided to undertake the arduous task of being a homemaker on a full time basis. Judith, a fighter and enterprising woman. Our Judith wanted to learn about haute cuisine and pastry making, and so she enrolled in International Cuisine and Pastry courses offered by the Agricultural Extension Program, attending at night at the Gabriela Mistral High School. Her passion for the art of cooking and confectionery accompanied her for the rest of her pilgrimage until almost her last days. She baked the cakes for all of her family’s celebrations. She also made cakes for birthdays and weddings to order, thus developing a successful business of making elaborate cakes for all occasions for many years. She also took sewing courses and her girls ALWAYS wore new outfits on Easter Day and on other occasions, made by her. She took craft courses and made clay and plaster houses that she painted and decorated with miniature ornaments. Everywhere in her house you could find something made by her!

Judith was a woman completely committed to her family, but also her home was "the Headquarters” of the entire extended family. For everyone who came to San Juan from “the Island," the mandatory stop was at Judith’s and Ismael's house. Its doors were always open, some visited for a couple of hours and others for a couple of days or whatever was necessary. The girls grew up and the grandchildren arrived, Christian, Maria Elena, Nicky and Adriana, whom in one way or another, she took care of either at home, such as Christian, while they lived in PR or would go on a plane to take care of them wherever they were, as neither distances nor winter weather prevented her from actively participating in the lives of her grandchildren! Judith was also active in her Church and was even a member of the Barbara Ann Rossler Church Women's Choir, which she fervently attended until she moved away from PR in 2017. While at home, she kept her social calendar very busy between Prayer Circles, Agricultural Extension Club meetings and outings with her friends, "the Civic Girls," as Ismael jokingly called them. The time came for the inevitable temporary farewell to her beloved Ismael, on March 20, 1997. Judith was always an independent woman and she proved it by choosing to stay at home and continue with her life in Puerto Rico. She never had much rest and on the contrary she always had a project or something to do. Every year she traveled to and from his daughter Udy's home from March to October and sometimes flew in the summer months to his daughter Illy's home. But every year, like the birds during the winter months, she returned to her beloved home in Puerto Rico. In 2017, after a big party to celebrate her 90th birthday, Judith moved to her daughter Iraida's house in Michigan, although she still longed to return to what was always her home in Puerto Rico. Once established, she became the center of attention of the family. Thanks to her cell phone, Judith continued with her task of being in charge of keeping the whole family, both in Puerto Rico and here in the United States, aware of happenings and other family details. During her 7 years residing in Michigan, she also traveled to visit his daughter Maria Judith in Tennessee and her relatives in Florida. Time, as Alberto Cortés said – "Old age, the hardest of Dictatorships,” took care of its thing and our Judith began to show signs of difficulties with her health. With great enthusiasm she celebrated her birthdays for which her granddaughter Adriana became the pastry chef on duty. She recently turned 97, which although is easy to say, it was a great blessing for her daughters and grandchildren and that not many people have the privilege of attaining. On July 21, our Beautiful Judith took her last journey and her Jesus, whom she loved so much and whom she called "My Christ" called her to return Home. Now she is reunited again with her beloved Ismael, her beloved Tato and Tata, and all her relatives who preceded her.

Judith Quiñones Bandas, de 97 años de edad, de San Germán, Puerto Rico y de Kentwood, Michigan, fue a morar con Nuestro Señor el domingo 21 de julio de 2024. Judith fue una muy amada miembro de su Iglesia y de su comunidad en San Juan, Puerto Rico. Aprendió el arte de hornear bizcochos y más adelante desarrolló su propio negocio de venta de bizcochos para todas ocasiones. Participó activamente en la crianza de sus nietos, sus sobrinos Wilfredo y Hėctor y fue cuidadora de su mamá y de su suegra. 

Fue precedida en fallecimiento por su esposo Ismael Rodriguez Bonilla; hijastros: Ismael Rodriguez, Aida M. Rodriguez, sus padres y muchos hermanos.

Será recordada amorosamente por sus hijas: Maria Judith (Nicholas) Rodriguez-Martyak, Iraida Rodriguez; nietos: R. Christian Rivera, Maria Elena Martyak, Nick (Kristen) Martyak, Adriana Valle-Rodriguez; Carlitos, Annette (Fredy), Jannine (Renė), Sharon (Eric), Javier (Debbie), Ismael (Waliria) and Vanessa; su biznieta, Mya Grace Martyak; su amado perrito Cuddles; hermanos: Gladys, Wilfredo (Sheila) y Ramon; sobrinos, primos y muchos otros “familiares” a quienes ella crió o ayudó a cuidar de una manera especial.

Familiares y amigos se reunirán con la familia para el velorio el sábado 27 de julio de 2024, de 2 a 3 p.m. en Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4646 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, Kentwood. El servicio funeral religioso seguirá inmediatamente a las 3 p.m. en la Funeraria con el Rev. Ricardo Angarita, Oficiante. Jamás se lo hubiese imaginado, aquella jibarita nacida en el Barrio Ancones de San Germán, Puerto Rico en el año 1927. El mundo se acercaba a la depresión de los años 30 cuando se crió Judith Quiñones Bandas fruto de la unión de Rosa Bandas y Antonio Quinones, conocido en el barrio como Toño Leon. Creció en San Germán en donde vivió hasta poco después de graduarse de la Escuela Superior Lola Rodríguez de Tio con honores en Economía Doméstica. Luego de terminar su Escuela Superior se lanza a una aventura para encontrarse con su futuro. Uno de sus hermanos mayores solidario, confabuló con unas tías para llevarla a escondidas de su papá a la estación del tren. Y así, con boleto hacia San Juan, se aleja del pueblo que la vio nacer, “La Ciudad de Las Lomas” y se muda a casa de su hermana mayor Margarita que ya vivía con su esposo en el Barrio Obrero, Santurce. Allí comienza a trabajar en la tienda por departamento Gonzalez Padin en el Viejo San Juan. Trabajando allí, y mirando por las vitrinas conoce al apuesto caballero, Don Ismael Rodriguez Bonilla quien trabajaba entonces en la tienda de RCA Victor justo al frente de Gonzalez Padín. La magia del amor hace de las suyas y Don Ismael se queda prendado de sus ojazos negros y su diminuta figurita. Se enamoran y se casan en Febrero 4 de 1955. De este acto de magia que llamamos amor nacen dos bellos retoños: Maria Judith (Udy) e Iraida (Illy). Establecen su residencia en la Urbanización Las Lomas de Río Piedras y vienen a completar el núcleo familiar los hijos mayores de Ismael, Ismael Jr. (Tato) y Aida Milagros (Tata) a quienes Judith asumió como propios y los terminó de criar desde su temprana adolescencia. Judith continua trabajando en Gonzalez Padín hasta que decide darse a tiempo completo a la ardua tarea de ser ama de casa. Judith, mujer luchadora y emprendedora. Nuestra Judith quiso aprender de Alta Cocina y Repostería y se matriculó en cursos de Cocina Internacional y Repostería ofrecidos por el Programa de Extensión Agrícola a los que asistía en las noches en la Escuela Superior Gabriela Mistral. Su pasión por el arte culinario y la repostería la acompañó por el resto de su peregrinar hasta casi sus últimos días. Todos los bizcochos de las celebraciones familiares eran confeccionados por ella. Además de que los hacía también por encargo y así desarrolló un exitoso negocio de confección de bizcochos para todas ocasiones por muchos años. También tomó cursos de costura y sus niñas estrenaban siempre trajes nuevos el día de Pascua y en otras ocasiones hechos por ella. Tomó cursos de artesanía y hacía desde Reyes Magos de barro, tejidos y casitas de yeso que pintaba y adornaba con miniaturas. En cada esquina de la casa se encontraba algo hecho por ella!

Judith fue una mujer comprometida completamente a su familia pero también su casa era “el Cuartel General” de toda la familia extendida. Para todo el que venía a San Juan de la Isla,” la parada obligada" era en casa de Judith e Ismael. Sus puertas estaban siempre abiertas...algunos por un par de horas y otros por par de días o lo que fuera necesario. Las muchachas crecieron y llegaron los nietos, Christian, Maria Elena, Nicky y Adriana, a quienes de una manera u otra cuido ya fuera en su casa, como a Christian mientras vivían en PR o montandose en un avión para irlos a cuidar dondequiera que estuvieran porque ni las distancias ni los inviernos le impidieron participar activamente en la vida de sus nietos! Judith también participó activamente de su Iglesia y hasta fue miembro del Coro de Mujeres de la Iglesia Barbara Ann Rossler a la que asistía fervientemente hasta que se mudo de PR en el 2017. Al mismo tiempo mantenía su Calendario Social muy ocupado entre Círculos de Oración, Club de Extensión Agrícola y salidas con sus amigas,” las Muchachas o las Cívicas” como jocosamente decía Ismael. El tiempo llegó de la inevitable despedida temporera de su amado Ismael un 20 de marzo de 1997. Judith fue siempre una mujer independiente y lo demostró al escoger quedarse en su casa y continuar con su vida en Puerto Rico. Nunca fue de mucho descansar y por el contrario siempre tenía un proyecto o algo que hacer. Todos los años viajaba y venía a casa de su hija Udy desde Marzo hasta Octubre y en ocasiones volaba en los meses de verano a casa de su hija Illy. Pero siempre, como los pajaritos durante los meses de invierno regresaba a su amada residencia en Puerto Rico. En el 2017, luego de una gran fiesta con motivo de la celebración de sus 90 años, Judith se muda a casa de su hija Iraida en Michigan aunque no deja de seguir añorando regresar a la que siempre fue su casa en Puerto Rico. Una vez establecida, se convierte en el centro de atención de la familia. Gracias a su celular Judith continuó con su tarea de ser la encargada de mantener a toda la familia, tanto de Puerto Rico como la de acá en Estados Unidos al tanto de los pormenores y detalles familiares. El tiempo, como decía Alberto Cortez – “La vejez, la más dura de las Dictaduras” se encargó de hacer de la suyas y nuestra Judith comenzó a dar señas de dificultades con su salud. Durante sus 7 años residiendo en Michigan, también viajó a visitar a su hija María Judith en Tennessee y a sus familiares en Florida. Con gran entusiasmo celebraba sus Cumpleaños para lo que su nieta Adriana se convirtió en la repostera de turno. Recientemente cumplió sus 97 años, que “se dice fácil” pero es una gran bendición para sus hijas y nietos y que no muchos tienen el privilegio de tener. EL 21 de Julio nuestra Hermosa Judith dio su último viaje, y su Jesus, a quien tanto amo y a quien ella le llamaba “Mi Cristo” la llamó a que se regresara a Casa. Ahora ya está reunida nuevamente con su amado Ismael, sus amados Tato Y Tata y todos sus familiares que la precedieron.
