Joyce Elaine Helms

Joyce Elaine Helms (nee Scott), age 77, of Grandville passed away peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday, January 22, 2023. She was at home under the care of her family and hospice for the past five months. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jon H. Helms; parents, Albert Wm. and Carol R. Scott; her brother, Jack; and nephew, Nicholas A. Scott. Joyce leaves behind her daughter, Odette Helms Smith (Greg); son, Jon Ozzie Helms (Brooke); grandchildren, JoAnna, Jonathan, Jasmine, Jennifer, Noah, Gideon, Angel, Zac; and three great-grandchildren. She also will be affectionately and lovingly missed by her siblings, Nancy Sharp (Don), Sally and Pete Nowicki, Doug and Denise Scott, Lorrie Scott (Jack); many nieces, nephews, cousins, and her dear friend, Carol Bulgarella. Joyce was born October 12, 1945 in Grand Rapids, MI and was raised in Grandville. She graduated from Grandville High School in 1963. She was baptized at and remained a lifelong active member of Grandville United Methodist Church. Joyce graduated from Chic Beauty School and opened Joyce Elaine’s Beauty Shop in her home, where she worked for nearly 50 years, until retirement in August 2022. Joyce loved her beautician career making her friends and family look and feel better about themselves. While raising her family and running her business, she received great joy from worship and service at GUMC. Joyce received love, support, and blessings from her church family through all the joys and concerns of her life. She also cherished the fellowship of her high school friends. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 26, 2022, at noon, at Grandville United Methodist Church, 3140 Wilson Ave. SW, with Rev. Ryan Wieland officiating. The burial will take place at Floral View Memorial Gardens. Relatives and friends may meet the family Wednesday, January 25, from 6-8 p.m. at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW, and one hour prior to the service at church. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Grandville United Methodist Church or to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
