Josephine Sarullo

July 6, 2021

Josephine E. Sarullo, age 83, of Hudsonville, passed away on Tuesday July 6, 2021. Beloved wife of her late husband, Sam, and mother to Michael (Teresa) Sarullo, Dina (Todd) Woodard, Elizabeth Shelven, Maria (Fergus) Butler. Proud grandmother of Isabella, Samuel, and Angelo Sarullo, Monica, Dominic (Victoria), and Anthony Woodard, Joseph, and Sam Shelven. She was preceded in death by her dear sister, Nancy (Joseph) Vultaggio. Remembered by brothers, Matteo (Stella) Oddo, Andy (Andrea) Oddo, and Bob (Susan) Oddo. She was a treasured aunt and godmother to many.

Growing up in Detroit, large Sicilian gatherings full of cooking, laughing, and sharing traditions instilled in Josie the importance of family at an early age. She also loved music and dancing, especially listening to Frank Sinatra with her sister, Nancy. Another passion early on was her love of the Detroit Tigers. Throughout her life she never missed a game and welcomed the opportunity to discuss Tiger baseball with a fellow fan. It was also in Detroit where she met the love of her life, Sam, while working as a secretary at Pepsi Cola. They were introduced at work, shared the same Sicilian heritage, and within the year they were married and spent 40 loving years together. Family was everything to Josie and she cherished making lasting memories. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, always providing her support and encouragement. She was the center of the family and kept everyone united.

Josie was a longtime member of Holy Redeemer Parish where she practiced her deep, unwavering Catholic faith through years of Bible study, loving actions, and service. Along with many incredibly caring friends and neighbors, a cherished source of strength and support came from her close-knit Bible study group. These friends became her second family as they spent many years praying, gathering, and serving others. A special thank you to LEAVES personal care which in her later years provided dedicated staff who cared deeply for her and kept her smiling.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, July 10, at 11 am at Holy Redeemer Parish, 2700 Baldwin St., Jenison with Fr. Colin Mulhall presiding. Burial Ravenna Cemetery. Josie was such an amazing person. Everyone who came in contact with her was forever touched. If you were lucky enough to get some of her homemade cooking it was so amazing. I can’t tell you how many Sunday dinners I got to have while in college but they were always the best treat. Josie and Sam were always so kind and welcoming. I know she loved her family and the Tigers they were her passion. She was always there for all her children and truly defined a Great Italian Mother. She will be missed but never forgotten Rest In Peace Josie and all my prayers go out to your family as they gather to celebrate a life well lived. Love Steve

Josie was always so much fun to play Bunco with. I looked forward to our monthly Bunco nights and always knew we would be adding to our fun when Josie was among us. We shared a love of the Tigers and often discussed recent ball games during our Bunco nights. The Bunco ladies will sorely miss Josie! It will not be the same without her.

My favorite memory of Josie was ironically when I was working in Grand Rapids and I stopped to visit Uncle Sam who was fighting cancer. Of course Jose insisted I stay for a meal. Eggs and asparagus, the best I ever had. The best I’ll ever have. God bless your family.
