Joseph Lindsay

LINDSAY - Mr. Joseph Lindsay, age 94, of Grand Rapids, passed away a year ago, on Wednesday, July 24, 2013. Joe was a life-long resident of Grand Rapids and attended Catholic Central High School. He served in the United States Army and Army Air Corp during World War II. Joe was an enthusiastic athlete, especially talented in tennis and basketball, which he also coached. His appreciation of jazz and big bands led Joe to develop a large and unique music recording collection that he loved to share with others. He was a kind and devoted friend and family member who could brighten even the darkest day with a well-told joke or a funny story. This skill served him well as a bartender at the Silver Derby Tavern for many years. Joe was preceded in death by sisters, Ruth, Helen, and Irene; brother, Jack; and nephew, John. Joe is survived by his niece, Ann Lindsay, and was also survived by his sister-in-law, Sally Lindsay, until her death in 2014. He and his family are grateful for the friendship and support received from long-time family friend Rose, and dear friends and neighbors, the Vandermeers, the Wiers, the Ziehlkes, the Jacobsens, and the Dara family and their staff at Villa Pizza #1.
