Vanderstel lll, John "Jack" John “Jack” Vanderstel III, aged 84, passed away on Monday, February 16, 2015. He was born to John and Lorena Vanderstel Jr. on March 18, 1930 in Grand Rapids. He graduated from South High in 1948 and enlisted in the US Army in 1949. During his service, he was in Hawaii for three months and then sent to Korea for the next 18 months during the Korean War. He utilized the GI Bill and obtained his Business Bachelors Degree through Davenport University in 1953. He retired from General Motors after over 20 years of employment. John was the eldest son of John and Lorena, who were the owners of Vanderstel Lock and Key which was established in 1925 in Grand Rapids. He is survived by his beloved wife of over 46 years, Virginia (nee Peggy Toles); children, Kelly (Ray) Bennett of Grand Rapids, Mike (Sandy) Gilbert of Port Huron, Debbi (Steve) Baker of Hamilton, Carol Vanderstel of West Palm Beach, FL, Barbara Vanderstel of Tucson, AZ, Bobby (Bonnie) Vanderstel of Caledonia, Michelle (Bob) Goodell of Fennville; 22 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service for John will be held on Friday at 11:00 am at Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4031 Clyde Park SW, Wyoming with Rev. Dennis Gilbert officiating. Interment Oakhill Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6-8 pm, on Thursday from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm, and also on Friday from 10-11 am prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to VFW Post 702.
