John Allen Free, age 90, of Jenison, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 4, 2026, of cancer. John was born on July 23,1936, in Knoxville, Tennessee. A true southern gentleman, John was known for his warm smile, quick wit, and gift for conversation. At 17 years old, John answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps where the values of service, loyalty and perseverance remained with him throughout his life. Following his military service, John built a successful career with AT&T dedicating 35 years of service. Upon retirement, he moved to Michigan and married the love of his life, Marilyn Kay, and gained an extended family.

John was preceded in death by his only son, Allen Ray Free. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Marilyn Kay; Allen's children: Kasia and Brannon Free; and his great-grandsons: Gavin and Greyson all of Dallas, Texas. He is also survived by his extended family whom he cherished: Shelly (Tom) Lamica, Steven (Lisa) Roskiewicz and David (Kris) Roskiewicz; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews who deeply loved Uncle John; his sister-in-law, Margaret Ann Wilson; and many dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

Many of his friends will remember John as a fixture at "The Table" at Marge's Donut Den where John contributed to the lively conversations, starting stories, solving the world's problems or making those around him laugh with his southern humor. John was a member of Abundant Life Church of God and a proud and active member of Grand Rapids AMBUCS for many years. He served as President in 1994 and 1995. His mission of service mirrored his own generous spirit.

Though John's family and friends will deeply miss his presence and southern drawl they take comfort in the countless memories, stories, laughs and lessons he leaves behind. His life was marked by hard work, devotion to family and friends and an unwavering ability to connect with others.

As John requested, a graveside service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, at Rosedale Memorial Park, O-50 Lake Michigan Dr. NW, Grand Rapids, with Rev. Rick South officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Abundant Life Church of God (4043 Byron Center Ave. SW, Wyoming, MI 49519) or Grand Rapids AMBUCS (Attn: Larry Nix, 2655 Hylane Ave. NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49505).
