John Arnold Nelson

John A. Nelson, age 85, of Wyoming, passed away on Sunday, June 13, 2021 surrounded by his family. John was a loving husband, dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa who was blessed with a great sense of humor. He retired from Michcon after 34 years of faithful service. John proudly served in the Michigan Army National Guard Reserve for 6 years. John was actively involved at his church singing in the choir and serving in many capacities over the years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He and his wife Shirley spent many years traveling together in their motorhome and wintered in Florida for 28 years. John enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing, and most of all making memories with his family. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Michael McDowell; his sister, Margaret Heynen. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 66 years, Shirley; his children, Susan (Robert) DeRuiter, Karen McDowell, Cindy Bush, Cathy (Wayne) Musselman- Pope, John II (Barb) Nelson, Leigh Ann (John) Packard; 16 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; sister, Kathleen Przybylski; brother, Eric (Mary) Nelson; and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday 10 am at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 1630 Godfrey Ave. SW, Wyoming with Fr. Stephen Dudek presiding. Relatives and friends may meet the family Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4145 Chicago Dr. SW, Grandville and also from 9-9:45 a.m. prior to the service at church. The family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff and caregivers of Kindred Hospice for the love and compassionate care given to John.
