Remembering Joann Hanenburg

Joann (Eelsingh) Hanenburg, age 90, a child of God, was called home by Him on July 20, 2026. Rejoicing in her homegoing, but missing her presence, are her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: Dave and Brenda Hanenburg (Dave and Jennifer Van Dyken [Kinley and Breelyn], Lindsey and Lucas Yax [Lillyen and Laney]), Bill and Jane Hanenburg (Ben and Megan Hanenburg, Jody and Daniel Davis), Joel and Karen Hanenburg (Seth and Jennifer Hanenburg [Dawson, Brady, and Flynn], Ashley Hanenburg and Jaxon, Laurissa and Josh Kukla), Mary and Craig Bellmer (Matt and Ana Bellmer [Noah]. Also surviving are her sister, Norma Verhey; brother-in-law, Tom and Betty Bolt; in-laws, Marjorie Emerson, Ed and Nancy Hanenburg, Erwin and Dawn Hanenburg, Bob and Faye Hanenburg; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Joann was preceded in death by her husband, Larry; sister, Lois Bolt; brother-in-law, Roger Verhey; brother-in-law, Jim Emerson; and sisters-in-law, An Hile and Marilyn Hanenburg. Jo and her husband, Larry, moved to Grandville in 1959, and spent their whole married life there. Jo and Larry became founding members of Fellowship CRC where Jo served in many capacities using her gifts for others. She was also known for welcoming all visitors to church as well as being a prayer warrior for all. Jo also loved to make cards; she felt a homemade card was special. After Larry’s passing, Jo moved to Waterford Place in Jenison where she made many friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Friday, July 24, 2026, at Fellowship Christian Reformed Church, 4375 Ivanrest Ave. SW, Grandville with Rev. Bob Boersma officiating. Burial will take place at Grandville Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with the family Thursday, July 23 from 6-8 pm at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW and on Friday from 1-1:45 pm at the church prior to the service. Jo and Larry had several charities that were special to them and Jo requested that memorial gifts be made to The Potters House, Mission French Africa, Fellowship CRC, or Faith Hospice. As a family, we would like to thank the staff at Waterford Place and Faith Hospice for the care given to mom.

Mike and I were sorry to hear about Jo's passing, but we rejoice that she is now at the Lord's banquet table. We met Jo several years ago when she and Dave and Brenda came to Rush Creek Bistro's Sunday brunch on a regular basis. We affectionately called her "mom". Mike enjoyed "flirting" with her. She will be missed! May God give each of those surviving the comfort and peace that they need during this time of loss.
