Remembering Jean Schneider

Jean M. Schneider (Jeannie -“Mama Jean”), age 73, of Morley, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, with her loving family by her side.

Jean was born in Dallas, Oregon, on November 12, 1947. She loved fiercely and unconditionally. Jean opened her heart to so many around her as family and often referred to her greatest accomplishment as raising her three daughters. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cooking, baking, reading/listening to books, volunteering at church, loving on her cats, and getting into a little mischief when possible. Her goodbyes always involved a hug (including people she just met) and her spirit will continue to hug our hearts always.

Jean retired from Keebler in Grand Rapids and served her country as a Sergeant in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC). Jean was a proud veteran and a lifetime member of the American Veterans (AMVETS) where she served as Commander of Post #1941 for five years. She was also an active member of the American Legion Post #98 Auxiliary in Big Rapids, Michigan, Michigan, and passionately promoted the Americanism program in local schools.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Schneider; mother, Amanda Payne; father, Walter Payne; and sister, Janice Waddell. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Jean (Ron) Houghton, Lori (Todd) Schmitz, Anna (Larry) Fontaine, Scott (Tammy) Schneider, and Sherry Billington; sister, Jerri (John) Selders; brother, Jim (Barb) Payne; 18 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 10, at 11 a.m. at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW. The burial will take place at Georgetown Township Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family Monday, August 9, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Military honors provided by American Legion Post #98 Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the family to assist with funeral expenses would be greatly appreciated. Checks can be made payable to MKD Funeral Home and mailed to MKD Funeral Home at 4145 Chicago Dr. SW, Grandville. Donations envelopes will also be available at the funeral home.
