Jean Brower

September 17, 1937 ~
April 11, 2021

Jean Carol (Alberda) Brower, age 83, of Hudsonville passed away at her home on April 11, 2021. She was born on September 17, 1937 in Manhattan, Montana to Peter and Hannah Alberda. She married Jerry Brower on January 26, 1961. Jean moved to Grand Rapids to attend Calvin College where she earned a degree in Medical Technology. She worked at Butterworth Hospital for 43 years. After her retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at the Hudsonville Library, Feeding America, and Revive, where her organizational and laundry skills were put to good use. Jean and Jerry opened their hearts and homes to many Calvin College students - her Sunday dinners were a highly anticipated weekly event, and no one left hungry. Jean enjoyed her faithful friends, especially their game dates and outings. She was a long-term and devoted member of Georgetown CRC. She ministered to others through her cooking, childcare, card-sending, and by exemplifying Jesus’ command to love your neighbor. She was a fan and cheerleader for all of her grandchildren. She developed a love and keen understanding of basketball, soccer, and most recently track, and was equally at home in a concert hall or theater. Games and performances were always a little sweeter when Grandma was there, and not just because of the treats she often brought. She is survived by Jerry Brower, her husband of over 60 years. Also surviving are her children, Kerry and Elroy Vegter of Hudsonville, Karla and Bob Duimstra of Appleton, WI, Owen Brower of Croton, and Karen and Bill Sall of Grand Rapids; grandchildren, Jessica and Brian Kuipers, Tyler and Chelsey Vegter, Travis and Abbie Vegter, Trent Vegter, Alexa Duimstra, Jared and Erica Duimstra, Peter, Charlie, and Eliza Duimstra, Delaney, Quinton, Lydia, and Hannah Sall; great-grandchildren, Savannah, Grayson, and Ashton Kuipers, Landyn and Beckham Vegter; siblings, Wil and Jo Alberda, Bern and Verna Alberda, Pete and Bonnie Alberda, Pat and Bob Ungersma, Clif and Marilyn Alberda, Wayne and Donna Brower, Paul and Sheryl Brower; numerous nieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her grandson, Calvin Sall. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, April 14, 7 pm at Georgetown CRC, 6475 40th Ave, Hudsonville with Rev. Marc Nelesen officiating. The service will be livestreamed via georgetowncrc.org/jean. Burial Floral View Memorial Gardens. Relatives and friends may meet the family Wednesday from 4-6:45 pm at the church. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Revive ℅ Unity Christian High School, 5900 48th Ave., Hudsonville, MI 49426, or Feeding America West Michigan https://www.feedwm.org/.

Kerry....I am so sorry to hear about your mom. She was such a nice mom to your friends. I remember spending the night at your house when we were teenagers and she would always make cinnamon rolls. She was always so warm and made you feel right at home. My thoughts and prayers are with you not only today but in the weeks that lie ahead. Especially when you just want to pick up the phone for a quick chat and realize she is in her heavenly home. May God be with all of you.

My thoughts and prayers to all family members. When I was still on the police department Jean and I would often have coffee in the ER. Jerry is my cousin.

Jean was always the smile that would light up a room. She was always willing to pitch in where needed at Revive even if it was fixing toilets or cleaning floors.

Jean was the first one to make me feel welcome at Revive. She would insist on dragging me to coffee break. She was always friendly for the 5 years I was there. Her passing saddens my heart. May God walk with you during this difficult time.
