Jay Leroy Shook was born in Caledonia on April 18, 1926 and died on August 28, 2019. He was the youngest son of Harvey and Veva Shook, and a brother to Merle (Ruth) and Ernest (Virginia) Shook. He married Eileen Miller on July 3, 1947. Jay and Eileen have five children: Jacqueline (Phil) Babcock, Sharon Shook, Nancy (Dean) Haney, Brian (Ruth) Shook, and Jill (Doug) Wilson. Jay lived a life of service to family, friends, community and nation. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was Caledonia Village Treasurer for many years, served on the Caledonia Library Board, and was a Caledonia Boy Scout Troop 202 Assistant Leader.  His time in the Navy led him to a career as a Skilled Trade Electronic Technician at Lear Siegler, Inc./Smith Industries. He had many skills and was always willing to help people and share his knowledge. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren: Margaret Lane, Sarah (Geoffrey) Walton, Paul (Jennifer) Shook, Blake (Andrea) Wilson and Brandon (Brittany) Wilson; 14 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Wilma Cutler; many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Harry and Gladys Miller; his brothers and their wives; his sister-in-law, Eula Davison; his brothers-in-law, Robert Davison and Theodore Cutler. The family wishes to thank the staff at The Village of Heather Hills and care providers at Metro Health. Jay and Eileen have fully participated in and enjoyed activities at The Village of Heather Hills. The family is requesting in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to The Village of Heather Hills, 1055 Forest Hill Avenue, Grand Rapids, MI 49546. Please designate “For Activity Program”. Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Jay’s Life at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at the Caledonia American Legion. Interment at Lakeside Cemetery, Caledonia, MI, where private services were held.
