James Lee Matthews passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 29, 2024. Born on March 19, 1983, in San Diego California, he then found roots in Greenville, Michigan, during his formative years, later settling in Grand Rapids, Michigan. James was a remarkable father, husband, brother, son, uncle, friend and framily member and will be sorely missed by his family and friends that were so important to him.
James’ vibrant spirit, boundless love for his family, and his unparalleled zest for life will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His ability to make others feel important and valued through attentive conversations and unwavering love was truly remarkable. The memory of his unforgettable laughter will forever live on in our hearts.
James found his soulmate in Meg, and together they formed a beautiful partnership filled with love and respect. Their children, Conner (15) and Haley (9), were the light of James’ life, and he cherished every moment spent with them, creating cherished memories as a family. His children will forever hold dear the image of their caring, fun-loving father who adored them deeply.
A driven entrepreneur, James pursued and developed numerous opportunities and businesses, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and creativity. He was also an avid traveler, immersing himself in diverse cultures and cuisines, finding joy in exploring faraway places and embarking on annual camping trips with his family and friends. His presence will be sorely missed during these adventures.
A true life of the party, James’s exuberance and charisma were unmatched. He brought joy and laughter to every gathering, whether he was sharing a story, leading a toast, or teasing during a competitive game. His friends and family will forever remember his ability to make the ordinary extraordinary.
James is survived by his wife, Meg; son, Conner and daughter, Haley; father, Guy Matthews; mother, Kym Van; father-in-law, Doug Rozema; brothers, Warner and Angie Schule (nieces and nephews: Emily, Ben, Allison, and Jake), Vu Nguyen (nephews: Wesley and Wilson), Chris Rozema; sisters, Kim Schule (nieces: Jada and Madison), Lynn Grosvenor (niece: Kieran); and the Framily.
Celebration of Life services will be Sunday, June 30, 2024, at Iron Well at 741 Leonard St. NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49508. Open house style starting at 11 AM.
