(Jacob) James Haagsma joyfully entered into the presence of his Savior on Saturday, October 6, 2018. He joined his best friend and wife, Mary, daughter, Carol Ann Vail, and great grandson, Benjamin Klooster. While Jim sailed through some rough waters physically in the past few years, he happily maintained that he was a South Christian Sailor where he taught and coached debate for many years. In addition to being a Sailor, he claimed the honor of being a Calvin College Knight where he also had the privilege to serve on the Board of Trustees, as well as many years in local government. Jim also served his country in the U.S. Army. After retirement, Jim continued to substitute at South where he became fondly known as “Gramps”. He was faithful in scoring basketball games and planning routes for the student council welfare drive until his body would not permit it. More important, though, is the faithful way Jim loved his wife and family. He was an example of Christian leadership, servanthood, sacrifice, and dedication. He was a husband who walked the talk of “in sickness and health.” He leaves this legacy to his children, Fred and Lisa Vail, Dave and Joan Haagsma, Tim and Maxine Haagsma, Bill and Susan Haagsma, his 29 grandchildren through birth and marriage, and his 22 great-grandchildren. He was a proud big brother to his siblings: Joyce VanLaan, who has gone before him, and Jerry, Bob, Don, Mike, and Ken. Special thanks are extended to the staff and friends at Waterford Place, who have become like family, for all the love and care they provided. Jim was a charter member of Hillside Community Church where he served as a member of the council numerous times. Services will be held at the church, 1440 68th St. SE on Thursday, October 11, at 11 am. The family will meet with friends and extended family on Wednesday from 4-7 pm at Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4646 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, Kentwood and one hour prior to the service at the church. This Spartan and Hawkeye fan will be missed by many, but we are happy that we can picture him being welcomed by His Lord with the words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” Because of Jim’s love for Christian Education the family suggests that in lieu of flowers, you remember him with a contribution to a Christian school of your choice.
