James F. DeWitt

Mr. James Frank DeWitt, 82, of Allendale, Michigan passed away on October 17, 2020. He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Frank and Flora DeWitt. He was preceded in death by his parents and his great-granddaughter, Lindy Czarniak.  He is survived by his wife, Judith (Strickland) DeWitt; his children, James (Celeste) DeWitt, John (Ann) DeWitt, JoAnn (James) Purdy, Jeff (Melody) DeWitt; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; many in-laws,  cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.  Jim met his wife of 61 years at the Grand Rapids Speedrome. They were married on August 29, 1959. As a young man he got his first full time job at North End Creamery.  A couple of years later, he started at Bissell, Inc., and he spent 42 years there.  After he retired from Bissell, he worked for a short period of time at Allendale Public Schools.  Throughout his life he also worked additional part time jobs at Kenowa Hills Public Schools as a bus driver and at the corner gas station.  He had a love for old cars, going camping, spending time at deer camp, bowling, and spending time with family and friends.  He was an active member of the LifeLong Learners Club.  Relatives and friends can meet the family from 1:00-2:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 24 at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 6651 Scott St. Allendale, 49401.  A memorial service will be held following the visitation at 2:30 p.m. Those who would like to make a memorial contribution may make donations to Mary Free Bed, Ottawa Area Center, or Allendale Nursing Home.
