Family owned and operated for over 85 years.
James David Schaaf Jr. was born February 5, 1948 in Detroit to James Sr. and Marie Schaaf, growing up with his brother, Ken, in various small towns around Michigan.
After the family settled in Grandville, he joined his dad and brother in ownership of Grandville Roofing. A hard worker, he retired from Michigan Natural Storage in 2010.
In 1966, Jim met Laurie Waalkes, who three years later would become his wife. They bought their first house in Wyoming, and lived in the town for 52 years, raising two children, David & Rachael.
A founding member of Ivanrest Church, Jim served in several ministries, including the role of elder at the time of his passing. He had a servant’s heart, often visiting nursing homes and helping build houses in Guatemala.
Jim enjoyed boating, spending summer weekends with his family cruising Lake Michigan on their powerboat, and annual family trips to Traverse City to boat the small lakes with their friends.
Jim loved golf, a passion he continued until the courses closed for the season last year.
Later in life, he found a new hobby, participating in sailboat races, from small weekly events on Lake Michigan, to multi-day races from Chicago to Mackinac Island.
But Jim’s favorite pastime was spending time with his family, traveling, watching grandkids’ events, drives to the beach, and trips to California for visits with David and his family. He adored his grandchildren, and they loved his teasing. He was perhaps the world’s best hugger.
Jim was diagnosed with cancer in February, but he faced the unexpected diagnosis with courage and grace, seldom complaining or questioning God, owing to the “blessed assurance” he had through Christ. He stepped into heaven March 17, 2022 at the age of 74. He is survived by his loving wife, Laurie; children, David (Sara) Schaaf and Rachael (Ryan) Barnum; brother, Ken (Kathy) Schaaf, and his grandchildren, Will, Emma, Lincoln, and Donnie Schaaf, and Bethany, Hannah, and Nathan Barnum. He will also be missed by many extended family, friends, and neighbors. A visitation will be held 5-7pm on Thursday, March 24 at Ivanrest Church, 3777 Ivanrest Ave SW, Grandville, followed by a Celebration of Life service at 7pm.
Contributions in honor of Jim may be made to Paradise Bound Ministries at www.paradisebound.org.
