September 23, 1950 ~
October 20, 2021

James B. Ward, aged 71, of Wyoming, passed away surrounded by family on October 20, 2021. Jim was born September 23, 1950, in Grand Rapids, Michigan to the late Richard A. and Margaret C. Ward. He graduated from Godwin Heights High School in 1968; earned two degrees from Michigan State University: a teaching certificate for History in 1972 (with honors) and a MA in Curriculum and Teaching in 1990; also earning a MA degree in Library Science from the University of Michigan in 1975. In 1976, Jim began working for Forest Hills Public Schools at Northern High School as the first media specialist. His 39 year career at FHPS was inspired by his Urban Corps experience at the Grand Rapids Public Library (GRPL) on a traveling “Merrie-go-Round” bookmobile, where he worked with his future wife, Jane. He was also involved in many school committees, coached the Quiz Bowl team, advised the National Honor Society for over 20 years, as well as leading the Forest Hills Education Association (FHEA) serving numerous terms as President and being involved in KCEA-PAC. Jim believed deeply in the importance of service: church council at Bethlehem Lutheran and Christ Lutheran; adult Sunday School teacher; church choir; organizing member of the City of Wyoming Tree Commission. He was also an enthusiastic participant in (D)emocratic politics. Jim loved following MSU athletics, the Detroit Tigers, all of his daughters’ activities, politics, listening to classic rock music (especially Led Zeppelin), the GR Symphony, marching bands, enjoying ice cream, bike rides, cross-country skiing, and teasing his family. He will be greatly missed. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 45 years, Jane; daughters, Rachael (Rhea Ghosh) Ward, Emma (Ronnie) Fogg, Abby (Alex) Strachan; grandchildren, Linnea Fogg, Max Fogg, Rayna Strachan; brothers, Steven (Sandra) Ward, Daniel (Susan) Ward; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Ann (Brock) Hesselsweet, Nick (Marianne Moore) Rodenhouse, Sue (Rick) Moore; nephews and niece, Mitchell (Kim) Ward, Mark (Amanda) Hesselsweet, Ian Hesselsweet, Johanna Moore, Cole Moore. A memorial service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held 2 pm on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at Christ Lutheran Church, 2350 44th St SW, Wyoming, with Rev. Ferra officiating. Per the family, masks will be required at the church on the day of the service. Relatives and friends may meet the family at church prior to the service from 1:00-2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to Christ Lutheran Church in Wyoming. Condolences may be sent online at www.mkdfuneralhome.com.

This tribute is a touch late. I just read the obituary in the Grand Rapids Press, thanks to my mother. Mr. Ward was my teacher in high school, and I worked with him in several capacities. I was the Class of 1990 from Forest Hills Northern. He served as the advisor to the National Honor Society, when I was the President of the NHS at FHN. He was also my advisor for an independent study on Political Philosophy. Mr. Ward was a quiet teacher, yet a powerful one. His independent study with me was one of my favorite classes in high school. He awoke me to a whole new topic area with which I was previously unfamiliar. I went on to major in Political Philosophy at the University of Chicago, thanks to Mr. Ward. I haven't been in touch with him since I graduated, but I am forever thankful for his teaching, his passion, and the way he helped me see more of the world through the minds of some of the greatest thinkers. Thank you, Mr. Ward, for supporting me in my intellectual journey and being such a wonderful mentor.

Jane, I didn't know Jim well but my few interactions with him were always a learning experience for me. Most of our conversations were in regards to The Tree Amigos and the vision he had for our city. I could tell he was very passionate about any committee or project he was involved in, he had a passion for people and believed in service to his community. After our conversations I always left him feeling renewed and recommitted to the things I'm involved in. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this very difficult time. Lee Ann

As much as I appreciated working with Jane at Orchard View, I also am moved by memories of the kind and personable colleague Jim was at Collins. I offer my condolences. His life’s work was worthwhile and his positive presence mattered.

I was a fellow media specialist working at Forest Hills Central Middle School. I have wonderful memories of Jim, Carol, Steve and myself sharing insights and laughter at our media department meetings headed by Bernice. My deepest sympathy to all Jim’s beloved family members.

Jim did so many great things for Forest Hills Public Schools. We met in 1985, when I became the new superintendent and Jim was a strong leader for FHEA. During the next 21 years, he was such an amazing leader and helped teachers accomplish so many great objectives. He was extremely instrumental in developing a culture of trust and caring. Following both of our retirements, we remained great friends and colleagues in supporting teachers and other educational employees. His foundation was his family and every meeting and discussion provided rare insights into the love and pride he had for Jane and his daughters. The picture in his obituary is etched in my mind forever. He will be greatly missed. Please accept my deepest condolences. Mike Washburn

Yes I shed a tear. We were not in a lot of contact but you were one person that I always liked and respected. We were buddies in grade school and until we graduated. You made a difference in many peoples lives.
