Jack Boelema

July 19, 1938 ~
October 23, 2023

Our strong and beautiful father, Jack Boelema, finished life’s race well, and entered into the presence of his Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ on Monday, October 23, 2023. He was 85 years old. Jack was a man of uncommon courage and wisdom. He was gifted with a sweet spirit and eternal optimism. His love for God made life’s yokes easy and its burdens light. No task was too low to take on, and no achievement too high that it couldn’t be accomplished. With love, all things were possible for our beautiful father.

Jack was devoted to his wife, Naida, and tenderly cared for her every need for over 60 years. He was an excellent father to his three children: Anne, Ted, and Bill. His sweet strength and good cheer will be greatly missed here on earth. But his presence will be welcome in Eternity, where Naida and Bill were already waiting to receive him. They had preceded his entrance into Heaven just one year before.

Jack will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his children, Anne and Jim Brouwer, Ted and Betsy Boelema; grandchildren, Adalynn, Samuel, Joseph, and Jacob Brouwer; sister-in-law, Sharon Staal; and his nieces and nephews, Shelly Brinks, Scott Staal, Matt Staal, John David Staal, and Keith Staal. Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Naida (Staal) Boelema; his son, William J. Boelema; parents, Theodore and Hilda (Karsies) Boelema; brother, Theodore Boelema; and sisters, Marian Daining and Elene DeVoogd.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW with Rev. Hank Vlaardingerbroek officiating. The burial will take place at Felch Street Cemetery in Zeeland. Relatives and friends may meet the family on Tuesday from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Family Promise of West Michigan - Partners in Housing.

My very favorite teacher of all time. I always enjoyed history and I'm sure it was because he made it so interesting and relevant. As a previous person mentioned, he had us use a WHOLE sheet of paper in our notes to write WEAK. He was the best! I hope you are comforted by wonderful memories.

Wow. Great loss for us; great gain for the eternal kingdom. We all loved “Mr. B,” who made history and civic (my LEAST favorite subjects) fun and relevant for us. Special personal memories were taking us 8th graders snowmobiling at his cottage on Lake Michigan and, best of all his helping my dad build OUR original family cottage there!! He was one of a kind and will not be forgotten! ❤️✝️

I have many fond memories of my years teaching with Jack at WSC. He was a wonderful colleague, advisor, and friend. I was honored after his retirement to be able to occupy his classroom and take over as social studies teacher. I know first-hand how much the students loved him and the stories he would tell. They thought they were getting the best of him when they would "get him off track" by encouraging more stories. He certainly made learning fun for them. Please accept my sympathy for your loss.

Jack not only taught me History at West Side but also how to paint, run a painting business, save for taxes and SS, and treat the customer right by doing little extras on any painting job. I have passed that on to all who work for me and themselves and his legacy definitely lives on! Praise our Lord in Heaven for his life. Many good memories of painting summers with him especially at the cottage.

I loved having your dad for my teacher at West Side. He has a red button on his desk he would push when we got too much for him. He made us put the explorers of the world to music so we would remember them and I still do! I remember so much from his class and so do all of my siblings who had him. What a wonderful man. The Articles of Confederation were WEAK!

I have so many fond memories of your Dad from West Side Christian (I graduated in 1967). His easy going manner made learning fun. He was my homeroom teacher in 8th grade and also my soft ball coach. The Boelema tradition continued for me at Christian High, where I was taught by Glenn and Uncle Jack. May you take comfort that your Dad and Grandfather is now experiencing the gjoy of heaven.
