J. David Sommer

J. David Sommer, age 89, of Grandville, Michigan, passed away peacefully with his loved ones by his side on Saturday, July 8, 2023, after a life well-lived. Dave was born on July 12, 1933, in Levring, Michigan, to Mildred and George Sommer. He graduated with a BA in Education from Calvin College and a Bachelor of Divinity from Grand Rapids Baptist Bible College and Seminary, where he met his future wife, Maryanne Schwartzlander. He then went on to further his education at Michigan State University obtaining a MA in School Counseling and attending the University of Michigan for Social Work. After which he began his career as an ordained minister at a branch of Cannonsburg Baptist Church and later went on to work for the Wyoming Public School System as a teacher, social worker, and administrator.

In addition to being a dedicated and loving husband and father, he was best known for his passion for helping people and his overwhelming kindness. Dave’s unwavering faith in God, was the foundation upon which he built his life. He was an inspiration to all who knew him and loved and admired by many. The impact of Dave’s life will be felt for years to come.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Maryanne Sommer; daughter, Dawn Sommer; granddaughter, Lluvia Sommer; sister, Rachel Garver; and brother, Ron (Ruth) Sommer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mildred and George Sommer and sister, Helen McGregor.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 12 (his 90th birthday) at Grandville Baptist Church, 4325 40th St. SW, Grandville, with Pastor Justin Guess officiating. The burial will take place at Winchester Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Memorial contributions in Dave’s honor may be made to Grandville Baptist Church.
