Irene Collette Dalzell

Irene Collette (née Wondergem) Dalzell, age 68, of Wyoming, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, August 13, 2020 with her daughter by her side.  Irene was born to Virgil and Jeanne (Menzel) Wondergem on November 24, 1951 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the oldest of eight children. Irene was a veteran of the United States Navy, proudly serving her country for 8 ½ years.  She loved to study the Bible and attended as many as three Bible studies each week.  Irene taught religious education to preschool children; nothing was more precious to her than talking about Jesus to “those little sponges.”  Her favorite Bible story was the parable of the lost sheep.  She was a cantor, an usher, a Eucharistic minister, and sang in the choir.  Irene was a diabetic and a three time cancer survivor.  Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in 2012.  She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Jeanne Wright; grandchildren, Jacob and Alaina Wright; great grandson, Parker; sisters and brothers: Marge (Gaylord) Tiff, William (Diana) Wondergem, Marion (Art) Dougherty, Robert (Vicky) Wondergem, John (Kami) Wondergem, Richard (Kelly) Wondergem, Leo (Brenda) Wondergem; many nieces and nephews.  Cremation has taken place, with burial at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan. A memorial service will be celebrated at St. Sebastian’s Catholic Church on Saturday, September 12 at 11 am, 9408 Wilson SW, Byron Center, MI.

I worked with Irene when she was active duty Navy. We worked in SECNAV Admin in the Pentagon, Rm 4D680,1973-1974. Irene was a hard worker. Hard to believe it was so long ago. Glad that she found happiness.

It’s hard to believe Irene, that you left this world so soon. Because of your faith, we know that your spirit is now at peace and there is no more suffering. We will miss your presence, our conversations and the delicious goodies that you would drop off from time to time. Not only neighbors, but in some ways family and still other ways friends. Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with you and your family. Jean and Alaina, we are here for you and will do what we can as the need arises. Deepest sympathy and much love, Sue Dines and David Alexander

Irene taught my 3 year old son Sunday School at St John Vianney. She was a Fantastic. WONDERFUL teacher. I am so sorry for your loss of Irene. What a blessing she was to so many children and adults alike. Her love of Christ was so deep and apparent.. She was truly a friend of God.

As a child I never understood the power of a dime. As an adult and an aunt who loves her littles so much, I understand now, the love in the dime. A little piece of tradition carried on to ALL of her nieces and nephews with a lot of love. I now treasure dimes and understand the power of love they hold. Thank you Lord for all the dimes of love. Thanks Aunt Rene
