Ila Mae VanderKolk

April 7, 1937 ~
February 21, 2021

Ila Mae (Tripp) VanderKolk, 83, of Grand Rapids, passed peacefully at home after an extended illness. Ila was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to many.

Born in Spring Lake, Michigan in 1937, Ila was the third of four children born to Roscoe and Ruth Tripp. It was a musical family. Ila played cello and loved to sing with her sisters. In high school they formed a trio called the Tripp Sisters, singing at many congregations and community events. They made two records.

In high school Ila met her first love and husband, Jerry Dillinger. In 1966 they moved to Honduras to become directors of Las Americas Academy. Later they created a ministry for young people, started a church, and ministered to those struggling with substance abuse. Ila also taught English. Their home was always open.

Upon returning to West Michigan, Ila earned her master’s degree in education. She became an integral member of the South Kent Community Education team and Godfrey-Lee schools, where she led the development of programs for English language learners. She was a trusted and caring support to students and families new to the United States.

Following Jerry’s death, Ila met the second great love of her life, Donald VanderKolk. As her family doubled in size, so too did Ila’s love for all her children and grandchildren.

Throughout her life Ila faithfully prayed for all she knew and loved. Even in the midst of her own difficulties, she remained a loving support for anyone in need. Wherever she lived, her home and her heart were always open.

Ila was preceded in death by her first husband, Jerry; daughter, Sheri; stepdaughter, Carrie; stepson, Don; sister, Lucy Kieft; brother, Jim Tripp. She is survived by husband, Don VanderKolk; sister, Marge Taylor; sons, Dan (Jackie) Dillinger and Randy Dillinger; stepdaughter, Vicki (Bob) McCollum; step daughter-in-law, Sarah VanderKolk; stepsons Randy (Bethany) VanderKolk and David VanderKolk; 15 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 11 am on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at Calvary Baptist Church, 1200 28th Street S.E., Grand Rapids.

Relatives and friends may meet the family on Saturday from 10 am to 11 am at the church prior to the service.

I have very fond memories of Aunt Ila and Uncle Jerry. I was the flower girl at their wedding at Spring Lake Baptist church I would guess about 65 years ago. Then she and her sisters sang at my wedding and Jerry did the service. I remember when I was about 10 spending a week with them at Fort Wayne, Indiana and we went to the beach and I had a new wrist watch (a big deal in 1960) and for safe keeping we put it in a bag with the baby's bottles and things. When we got home I went to look for the bag to get my watch. We couldn't find it. Turns out Uncle Jerry had burned the bag and all the contents. (There was enough left in the burn barrel to verify this). Also I had gotten new tennis shoes and my mother had told me not to get them dirty so I was very careful all week about my shoes. There was an ice cream truck that came around Fort Wayne. I had never seen anything like that in Grand Haven so that too was exciting. Lots of good memories of Aunt Ila. She and Aunt Marg were a big comfort to me when my sister passed away. She was very good at keeping in touch via email. I will really miss her.

Ila was one of the instruments of God used to move my family and I to Honduras. She has been a great example to me and an even greater source of encouragement. I am so sadden for your loss here on earth; but am excited for Ila to be with Jesus. Her saviour whom she loved so deeply! 2 Corinthians 5:8 ...absent from the body and at home with the Lord.

I am so thankful for Ila, her friendship, her life, and her openness to others. I have lost, for a little while, this presence, but know that she has simply preceded us to glory. My memories are all sweet with the backdrops of so many places like Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras. “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” (Psalm 116:15).
