Ida Mae Onan

September 3, 1927 ~
April 15, 2022

Ida M. Onan, 94, Byron Center, Michigan, passed away on April 15, 2022 and went to her eternal home to be with her Lord, Jesus Christ. Ida was born in Detroit, Michigan on Sept. 3, 1927 to the late Anna and Richard Bonebrake. Ida’s sister, Dorine Stolcenberg, also preceded her in death. Ida grew up in Detroit attending Cooley High School. The family moved to Grand Rapids in 1944 when Richard was transferred by General Motors to help open the new GM plant in Wyoming, MI. Ida attended Grand Rapids South High School, graduating in 1945. Ida had a long eventful life full of laughter, important relationships, and love. In 1980 she married Richard Onan and together they moved to Lake City, Michigan, where for nearly thirty years they built wonderful memories with their large combined families in the home that Dick built on Crooked Lake. Dick preceded Ida in death in 2008. Ida was intelligent, kind, and beautiful. She remained involved and informed of current events locally and around the world. She was a competitive Bridge player, an accomplished graceful dancer, and was known to never have her MacBook too far from reach. Ida had a large and generous heart for all living creatures and, in addition to her children, she adored the many pets she raised throughout her life, most fondly her Yorkie, Barney. Ida touched many lives and will be missed dearly by those who knew her, especially her children; Michael (Helen) Grant, Lowell, MI, Kathleen (James) Cook, Saugatuck, MI, Daniel Grant, Las Vegas, NV, Steven Rosendahl and Laura Moske, Grandville, MI, Laurie Rosendahl Lewis, Belmont, MI, and Teri (Robert) Irwin, Byron Center, MI. She had eleven grandchildren: Deanna Sparks, Anna Cowdin, Michelle Irwin, Chris Irwin, Lauren Grant, Danielle Campbell, Tonya Blomeling, Josiah Thompson, Tami Froese, Sydney Moske, and Jacob Moske. Ida had fourteen wonderful great-grandchildren, a number that seems to grow larger every year. She was also blessed with two nephews, Richard (Sharon) Stolcenberg and Dennis (Mary) Stolcenberg of Wyoming, MI, both with large families, as well as several cousins. Ida was also dearly loved by her step-children, Phil Onan, Kathleen (Richard) Comunale, Rosemary (DuWayne) Dougherty, Paul (Ann) Onan, and Rose Onan, along with their six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Ida will be buried next to her husband and near her parents and sister at Resurrection Cemetery in Wyoming, Michigan. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 am on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 9408 Wilson SW, Byron Center, with Msgr. Bill Duncan presiding. Relatives and friends may meet the family Thursday from 9:30-10:30 am prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Humane Society of West Michigan in her name are appreciated.
