ALLEY- Mr. Harvey Winton Alley III, age 94, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on May 7, 2020. Harvey was born in Norfolk, Virginia, and joined the Navy at the age of 16. He proudly served his country in World War II and spent his lifetime researching and documenting aviation history as a hobby. Most recently he volunteered at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo Museum, assisting with the restoration of downed aircraft rescued from the Great Lakes. He received his BA degree from Bob Jones University and had a career in education. He retired from the Grand Rapids Public School system and continued teaching adjunct for Cornerstone University, as well as volunteering as an ESL tutor for Calvin Seminary. His photography skills were exceptional, with a special ability to tell stories through pictures, helping students and career missionaries capture the cultures and peoples of South America. His joy and love of music was shared through his harmonica playing. He was an active member of the Breton Woods of Holland Home band, and he volunteered weekly in their Memory Care units. He also organized various "kitchen bands" and loved to share his instruments with families and children during "Family Fun Days" at Frederik Meijer Gardens. Harvey loved the Lord and served him faithfully in several local churches over his lifetime. He was a devoted husband for 57 years and is preceded in death by his wife, Janet (Amburgey) Alley, sister Frances Greenwald, and son-in-law, Bob Hoekstra. He is survived by children, Laura Hoekstra, Greg (Deb) Alley, and Carolyn (Doug) Hart; grandchildren, Betsy Hoekstra, Erin, Katie and Kerri Alley, Tricia (Isaac) Armistead, Justin and Anya Hart; great-granddaughter, Maryn Armistead; sisters-in-law, Donna (Irv) Lister and Cheryl (Jim) Bowman; and many nieces and nephews. A private graveside service for immediate family will take place on Tuesday, May 12, 2020.
