On November 16, 2016 Harold Walcott passed away unexpectedly at the age of 76. Harold was born in Allendale, Michigan to parents, Caroline and Herman Walcott. He attended Unity Christian High school and graduated with a teaching degree from Calvin College. Harold’s first professional job was a history teacher at Coopersville High School. He soon learned that his true passion was running his own business. Harold and his brother, Russ eventually took over the family business, Walcott Elevator, from their father. Under Harold’s leadership the business grew and diversified. Walcott Farms soon became the largest turkey producer in the state of Michigan. In 1998, when many turkey contracts were cancelled, Harold identified the need to reinvent his business. Harold along with other local growers created a new business model. Eventually, Harold became a founding member of Michigan Turkey Producers. This bold move secured his business and that of many other local farmers. Harold was not only successful as a local businessman but participated in State and National boards such as, the Executive Council for the National Turkey Federation, Chair of Michigan Allied Poultry Association and a board member of Farm Bureau Poultry and Livestock Committee. Harold was known by his peers for his exceptional work ethic and innovative approaches to business. While Harold had many professional accomplishments, he deeply valued his employees. Many employees worked for Harold their whole career. Harold will be lovingly remembered by his family for his generosity, loyalty, and his determination. We will deeply miss our Dad and Grandfather. His unique approach to life has touched ours and cannot be replaced. Harold’s extended family includes his sister, Marilyn and Bern Gelder; brother, Russ and Faith Walcott; sister, Lynne and Dave Miedema; many nieces and nephews. Dad you will be missed and always part of our lives: Beverly Walcott, Jill Walcott, and Jim Cox; Bob, Anne, Ben and Megan Beekman, Curtis, Senika and Brynn Walcott. A memorial service will be held Monday 11 am at Second Church 6950 Lake Michigan Dr., Allendale with Rev. Harold Veldman officiating. Relatives and friends may meet the family Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf (corner of Avery and Scott) 6651 Scott St., Allendale.
