Gordon Coates

December 27, 1937 ~
July 15, 2025

Gordon Coates, age 87, of Jenison, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. Gordy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He had a deep love for camping and traveled across the country exploring the outdoors. One of his greatest joys was fishing—whether by himself at a campsite or alongside his boys, creating lasting memories.

A talented woodworker, Gordy enjoyed taking on all kinds of projects, especially building birdhouses. He found simple pleasure in watching the birds and squirrels that would visit.

Though he jokingly referred to himself as the “grumpy old man”, those who knew him best saw his warm heart and love for conversation. Gordy genuinely enjoyed spending time with others and was always ready to lend a hand. Known for his boundless energy, he was rarely found sitting still—always busy, always moving, always creating.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Terry Lee Coates. Gordy will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years, Barbara Coates; children, Terry Coates, John Coates, Bill Coates, Mark Coates, Paul and Gayle Coates; grandchildren, Crystal Coates, Marcus Coates, Nathan Coates, and Kyle Coates; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Saturday from 10-11 am at the funeral home prior to the service.

I will miss talking with Gordie over the fence. He was a good neighbor, devoted to Barb, and always had a kind word for me. I liked his laugh.
