Giovanna "Gianna" LoPresti

Giovanna "Gianna" LoPresti, age 78, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2026, surrounded by close family and friends, both near and far.

Born to loving parents in Palermo, Sicily, she was the oldest of six siblings, and deeply beloved to all who knew her. She played a very special role in raising her brothers and sisters, serving as a mother figure to many people throughout her life. She got married and later moved to the United States with her husband and daughter, later welcoming her son in Michigan.

Hardworking all her life—whether through housekeeping, commercial cleaning, or caring for her own home—she was meticulously neat and orderly, ensuring that everything had its proper place. As a woman of profound faith, she had a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and loved Him devotedly by spending time in her Bible and in prayer every single day. She had a gift for bringing people together through her cooking—an art that she truly excelled at and poured her heart into, which created unforgettable family meals that filled her home with warmth. Her pasta and sauce was made with a special touch that no one could ever quite duplicate, because it was made with all her love and cherished by everyone who sat at her table. She enjoyed watching Italian television and calling her siblings for regular chats as it gave her a sense of being back home in Sicily. Endlessly clever, Gianna could always figure out a way to fix something that was broken, whether it was a cherished picture frame or a stubborn pants zipper.

Loud, vibrant, and completely full of life, Gianna had an undeniable presence that filled any room she was in. She possessed a quick wit, hilarious sense of humor, sharp mind, and strong will. Her remarkable strength, resilience, and vitality carried her through beating two different kinds of cancer three times. She never gave up and fought with fierce persistence until the very end.

While she loved authentic Sicilian and Italian cuisine, she also enjoyed a good plate of Chinese fried rice every now and then. She adored baby pink and light blue, lighting up whenever she found something in either shade. Music was a constant joy in her life, and she loved listening to and singing along with her favorite Italian songs from back in the day.

Above all, she loved hard and took care of all those around her as if they were her own. Her kisses were healing and her hugs felt like home. She never missed an opportunity to tell you how she felt, and she forgave easily. She was independent, reliable, and someone you could always count on to answer the phone. No one will ever be able to supersede the special place she held in everyone’s heart; she was dear to every person who knew her, whether family member or friend, and she will never be forgotten.

She is preceded in death by her father, Tommaso LoPresti; her mother, Antonia Pecoraro; and her ex-husband, Agostino LaFranca.

Giovanna's life and legacy live on through her children, Maria Linda (Jamie) Saldusky; and Alessandro Vito LaFranca. She is also survived by Becky LaFranca (Ron) Roelofs, who remained a devoted part of Gianna’s life.

She was a proud, adoring Nonna to her grandchildren, Gessica (Christian) Rodriguez, Gabriella Chrisman, Letizia (Tyler) Kas, and Alessio LaFranca, and a loving bis-Nonna to her great-grandchildren, Azura, Nyko, and Nova Chrisman; and Tessa and Toby Kas.

She is lovingly remembered by her five siblings, Benedetto (Maria Russo) LoPresti, Caterina LoPresti, Salvatore LoPresti, Eleonora LoPresti, and Maria Rosa (Giuseppe Sofia) LoPresti, and all of their children in Sicily. Additionally, she is survived by her brother-in-law, Franco LaFranca; and her nephews, Roberto (Courtney) LaFranca and Maurizio (Dawn) LaFranca, and their children, along with a host of extended family and friends.

A celebration of life service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to help cover funeral expenses to fulfill her final, heartfelt wish of interment in her beloved homeland of Sicily with her parents.
