Frank L. Grimm

April 14, 1936 ~
June 18, 2021

Frank L. Grimm, age 85, of Wyoming, passed from this life to the next on Friday, June 18, 2021. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Evelyn. Frank lived his whole life in Wyoming, Michigan, but his impact spread far. Frank was a three sport athlete at Wyoming Park (football, basketball and track) and was also involved in theater. Very well-liked by his classmates he was voted most popular with his future wife Evelyn. Under his senior picture it states, “Never so busy a man as he.” He also competed in two sports in college and was the MIAA conference champ in cross country. After graduating from Kalamazoo College, he taught biology and physiology at Wyoming Park for 35 years. In addition to teaching, he also coached cross country and track. His successes as a coach are many but what was most important to him were the individuals on his team. His honesty, integrity and expertise helped his athletes achieve great performances but also served as a great example for life. Even when Frank was done coaching and retired from teaching, he worked basketball games and continued to run the Wyoming Relays (renamed the Frank Grimm Wyoming Relays). In retirement, Frank didn’t slow down. He ran a painting business with some of his kids. He and Ev traveled together with friends to Alaska, Hawaii, Panama, and Europe among other places. He biked with friends and relatives all over the United States. He hiked most of the Appalachian trail, bits at a time over years, with his brothers-in-law. He also did several horseback riding trips out west. In retirement, his garden continued to grow, especially the flower portion, specifically dahlias. Frank made connections with other dahlia growers and ended up with a huge variety of dahlias that he would cut and deliver all over town several days a week. Just because it made people smile. If a person knew Frank from any of the above activities they probably would also know how much he loved his wife. Frank bragged about Ev all the time. They fell in love in high school and lived a Godly life together ever since. Frank became Ev’s full time caregiver when Alzheimer’s kept her from being able to care for herself. His devotion to her to the end has been inspiring. Frank looked forward to his move to Rivertown Ridge a year and a half ago to share his jokes, stories, and kindness with residents and caregivers. In the short time he was there, many have said what a good man he was and how he positively impacted their lives with his humor, compassion and thoughtfulness. Frank’s children will forever remember his example of hard work, striving to do the right thing, words of wisdom and the best hugs. He will be greatly missed by his six children, Steve and Jan Grimm, Gayla and Jack Boersma, Karen and Bruce Huttenga, Mindy Grimm, Eric and Kris Grimm, Evie and Jeff Floyd; 17 grandchildren, Abby and Trevor Uitvlugt, Molly Grimm, Chelsey and Neil Scott, Dane and Lisa Boersma, Corin and Andrew Gait, Adam Huttenga, Cole Huttenga, Alyssa Oetman, Jason and Kelsey Oetman, Jenna Oetman, Tyler and Kelly Grimm, Laura Grimm, Kelli Grimm, Brooklyn Irvin, Makayla Irvin, Jagger Irvin, Gunner Irvin; five great-grandchildren, Mason Boersma, Amelia Scott, Emma, Ava, and Ezra Grimm. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 24, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Lee Street Christian Reformed Church, 1261 Lee St. SW, Wyoming, with Rev. Kent Rottman officiating. The burial will take place at Kent Memorial Gardens. Relatives and friends may meet the family Wednesday, June 23, from 4-8 p.m. at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW and Thursday from 10-11 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Frank Grimm. If you ran Cross Country or Track at Wyoming Park in the 1970s or 1980s the man you got to know was Coach Grimm. We’d run so much it could make you barf but as he’d say “No one runs as much as we do and no one wins as much as we do.” He was a big part of my high school years and some 40 years after I paid him a visit. What a wonderful man. I’m better for having known him.

Frank and I have been good friends ever since high school and college, and I want to mention a few memories that give me a nice feeling at this moment in time. At K College both of us loved sports and practiced running almost every afternoon for the college cross country team(4 mile runs) in the fall and track events(sprints and distances) in the spring. Frank was always faster than I in the longer races like 2 and 4 mile, but I had the edge on quarter , half and mile. We worked hard and enjoyed every minute of it. One year we participated in a campus game between fraternities; however, since we didn’t belong to any we competed as independents. We cleaned up in track, swimming and tennis. We both really learned to play tennis at K College where many of our friends were on the varsity conference championship team. We were not on the team, but we would go down to Stowe Stadium and play many nights until it was too dark to see the ball. It became a sport that we played the rest of our lives. After college Frank and his beloved wife Evie began raising their family of which they were both so very proud. After several years my wife Sylvia and I had moved out west to raise our family and one day we received a call from Frank who was going to bike on a western trip. He stayed with us for a few days and the next we heard from him he was going to herd cattle on a dude ranch for a week in our state and he stayed with us again for a few days. It was truly a blessing that we were able to visit with him then. These are a few of the memories that I will enjoy when I think of all the wonderful qualities that God bestowed upon my friend.

Mr. Grimm was such a great teacher and coach. I had the honor of having him as my teacher, and as my coach in Cross Country and Track for my 4 years at Wyoming Park. He was a great role model, a positive influence, and a Godly man. I have fond memories of our summer practices at the Grimm house and trips to invitationals and meets. He was firm, but fun at the same time with everyone. My prayers and condolences go to the family.

Frank was the greatest coach I ever had. He had a very quiet way of convincing you that you could fight through anything (like the big hill at Johnson Park). It's been almost 40 years since I ran for Frank, and I still lean on the lessons he taught me almost daily. He is irreplaceable.

Frank and I worked together for 6 years on the Frank Grimm Relays while I was the Athletic Director at Wyoming Park. We grew into friends and he invited our kids over to ride horses several times at his lovely home. The dahlia deliveries were a highlight, he even brought them to me at GR Christian, where I now work as AD. Frank always made time to listen to you and treated everyone with such kindness. His enthusiasm for high school athletics and his philosophies played a role in my development as a young AD. Condolences from our family to the Grimm family and thank you for sharing this wonderful man with all the rest of us. God Bless. JH

Frank and I were classmates at K beginning in 1954. Sorry to read of his passing. He was the same man in college as noted here; respected, quiet and dedicated to his studies and sport. Condolences to his family and many friends.

Mr. Grimm was one of my favorite teachers. He had a way to keep his students focused and enjoy learning about earth science, biology, and physiology. If you needed help before or afterschool with a part of assignment his was always there and had his door open before many others. Mr. Grimm was one teacher, along with Mrs. Lyons ( an english teacher at Wyoming Park), who saw the abuse my atep mother was putting on me and helped me get out of my dad's house and back home to my moms. For that he has always had a special place in my heart. I stopped by his house after high school a few times just to say hello and let him know how I was. It is sad he is gone but as least he is with the love of his life again. RIP Mr. Grimm you may be gone but not forgotten.

There are teachers we had as children who we never forgot about our entire lives. Mr. Grimm was one of those teachers who cared about each and everyone of his students. I graduated from Wyoming High School in 1969. He was the teacher who started my nursing career with biology and physiology and the one who taught me the love of the sciences. Thank you Mr Grimm for the wonderful gift you gave me. You will not be soon forgotten.

I was Franks care partner for 8 months at rtr, He was a joy to assist every day, he always had a smile on his face and a joke ready to share. He never complained unless it was well worth sharing.. if I missed a few days he would be the first one to say and where have you been little lady?. He enjoyed life, he was the prom king of our memory care crowned in May 2021. He loved to dance and watch horse movies. And a great love for Sandra bullock movies. So many memories in my heart of this dear man.. He had a love for sweet pickles.. he would say take my blood pressure and if it's good how about some pickles! He was the best.. My heart is heavy but knowing he's where he has wanted to be for a long time, in heaven forever in the arms of Jesus and his wife! And one day we will walk those streets of gold with him. What a great promise! Frank you may not be here physically but you will live on on the many hearts you have touched during your life time! Thank you for being a part of my life and making it much richer by knowing you.. Praying for your family may Gods peace fill reach ones heart. ~your care partner Karen.
