Evelyn Jane Huyser, age 92, passed away peacefully at her home on September 20, 2022, after a six-month courageous battle with cancer. She was born February 20, 1930, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Benjamin and Maggie TerMeer. She was the 6th of eight children and is survived by sisters: Betty Haan, Marjorie (Robert) Smith, and sister-in-law, Aloha Meyer.
After graduating from South High School, she married Lester Huyser in 1950. They celebrated 50 years of marriage and she lovingly cared for Lester in their home prior to his death in 2000. She resided at the same home she and Les built for 72 years and shared their common passion for summers at their Maston Lake cottage. During those years, they raised four children and she worked part-time at Michigan Bell and Steketee’s.
She is lovingly remembered by her four children: James (Karen) Huyser, Sandra (Brandt) Fischer, Nancy (Guy) Longest, Douglas (Shari) Huyser. She was blessed with ten grandchildren: Jennifer Huyser, Chris (Terah) Huyser, Kim (Jason) Mauric, Greg (Aimee) Huyser, Sean (Mandy) Fischer, Keri Fischer, Matt (Sara) Longest, Kevin (Liz) Longest, Allison Huyser, Kate Huyser and sixteen great grandchildren.
Evelyn’s purpose of life can best be defined by her commitment to family, faith and friends. She was passionate about family traditions and gatherings, a trait inherited from her parents. For over 85 years, she worshiped at both Smith Memorial and First (Park) Congregational churches and demonstrated a generous heart for service. Through her active social life, she developed a strong network of friends and a lifetime of friendships.
Please join us in her celebration of life service to be held October 7, 2022, 11:00 AM at First (Park) Congregation Church, 10 East Park Place NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503. The service will be preceded by a visitation with family from 9:30 to 11:00. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place and internment will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to First (Park) Congregational Church.
