Emily was such a happy, happy person. Pretty much the only times I’d see Emily was at family gatherings that included Joe’s side of the Weiland Family. And that’s the foremost image I have of her: Happy Emily I remember her laughter that was from deep within. It wasn’t just a giggle or chuckle; it was a wholehearted laugh that burst out: Hahahahahahaha! Scrunched up her cheeks & half-closed her eyes & LIT UP HER FACE! Dear sweet Emily. There’s a famous picture of JESUS, LAUGHING JUST LIKE EMILY! Can you imaging the two of them together now??? I can!!! To Mom & Dad VanHoughton & the Weiland’s (Kendry, Brinleigh, Joe And Emily’s Big Sister, Dear, sweet Jen) Listen carefully At just the right moment I’ll bet you can hear Jesus & Emily, together, laughing over something that was said or done during her time here on earth Carry on her legacy of laughter. It’s a bubbling well deep within and pouring out of YOUR mouths now. Think of Emily, as you will often do. Tears IN your eyes, moistened cheeks, Checks scrunched up Eyes half-closed And that face - the radiant light Of people who Know Him: Let that Holy Laughter bubble out!

— Lindy Weiland

I am shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Emily's passing at such a very young age! I knew her from Cornerstone - a former student of mine, and someone who radiated joy and love of others, and especially love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We are all comforted by knowing that she is with her Lord and Savior, but even though "we do not sorrow as those who have no hope", we still sorry, and sorry deeply. May God grant peace to her family and friends during this difficult time.

— Andrew L Smith

Our hearts ache knowing Emily was called back home while she was still so young and loved by her family and friends. We did not know Emily personally but feel as if we did from all the amazing things Tyler has said over the years! Tyler absolutely loved his sister and said often how close they were, how much joy and laughter she brought to their family and how she was always there when he needed support. Our hearts and condolences are with Tyler and the rest of the Van Houten Family. <3 -Jeremy, Joseph, Alex & Angela

All of us in the Humanities Department at Cornerstone University are grieving the loss of a former student who felt more like a younger sister to us. Emily was a source of laughter and mischief of the best sort, but she was also had the scholarly gift, the curiosity and clarity of a wonderful mind. As a student who became a colleague and a dear friend, Emily will always remain an inspiration to us. We long for the time we will see her again in God's Kingdom.
