Mr. Ver Hoeven was by far my most impactful teacher. I was blessed to have him as my third grade teacher at South. Thanks to him, I came out of my shell that year and learned to believe in myself. He was not just a gentleman but a gentle man. I'm very sorry for the family's loss. I'm so grateful he was a part of my life.

So many characteristics come to mind as I think about Uncle Ed. He was kind, caring, soft spoken and calm. People were of top priority to him. He always took time to find out what was happening in my life and my family's lives. He kept his priorities evident to all-his family, friends, and those God wanted placed in his life. This world is a better place because of Uncle Ed. While he will be missed dearly, I'm sure he is seeing so many people he has impacted for Christ in heaven.

There are a few of us left still teaching at South that had the pleasure of working with Ed before his retirement. He was a man of integrity that we looked up to, respected, and admired. Many of us were new and went to Ed for advice and guidance. We thought of him frequently and often fell back on his words of wisdom. This earthly presence lost a great man, but may we meet again in eternal life. Julie, John, Kim, Marion, Julie

My sympathies to the Ver Hoeven family. I have many great memories of growing up on Blair Street across the street from each other. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Mr. VerHoeven was my 3rd grade teacher back in 1990. He was my first ever male teacher, I had only been at South Elementary for one year prior, and most of the friends I had made that previous year were in another class. Needless to say, I was nervous to start 3rd grade. But that all quickly changed as the year progressed and he became my favorite teacher. He left such an impression that I would visit him after school throughout the rest of my time at South Elementary (sometimes nearly every day), and we kept in loose touch even after I went on to Jr High and High School. A friend and I even paid him a visit to his home in college. I remember how much he touched my life and some of the lives of my dear friends and family. He was a great man, a fabulous teacher, and a strong mentor. He will be greatly missed and I wish you my deepest sympathy mixed with the joy found in eternity, knowing we'll get to meet up again in Heaven.

Our deepest sympathies to Shirley, Becky, Cindy, Tim, and all the family members on the loss of Ed. We have so many memories going back to the ‘60s, growing up together at Fellowship Reformed Church in Hudsonville. And all the Hudsonville Public School activities as well! Cindy, I let Sue Boerman know in Florida and she said she was sitting with a lot of sweet triggered memories as well. Our lives were so intermingled through church and school and the memories are so sweet. Then we had the gift later in life to have Ed and Shirley be our small care group leaders at Fellowship. They would host such wonderful gatherings, the discussion was always rich and Ed and Shirley both so wise and loving. We will continue to uplift you in prayer as you go through this deep time of mourning. Sue, Doug, and Lois

My brother Ed,where does one even begin after sharing 82 years in the same family, many conversations upstairs in the old farmhouse and doing farm work,on the golf course,on vacations, bus trips and later in their home. He was not only my brother but an awesome christian friend. Yes I'll miss him dearly, but I also know he is healed completely and rejoicing in heaven with Mom and Dad, our grandson Andrew Sage and our many christian brothers and sisters who have died In Christ, and know that this parting is temporary and that in God's timing we'll meet again and you will show us around your new home even as you did around Sandy Pines!
