July 28, 2023

Edward Joseph Takens, age 64, of Jenison, went to his heavenly home on Friday, July 28, 2023. Ed graduated from Jenison High School where he was a talented athlete in basketball and baseball. He worked for D&W Food Centers as a General Merchandise Manager for 20 years. He also worked at Grantex as a linen delivery driver for 23 years and in retirement worked part time as a bus driver for Jenison Public Schools. Ed raised his three children with his former wife of 37 years, Laurie Takens. He was a proud “Pops” to his six grandchildren and loved spending time with them and cherishing them. In Ed’s earlier years, after high school, he played travel softball for several years and hit many over-the-fence home runs. Riding his motorcycle along the lakeshore was one of his favorite pastimes. Ed also spent a lot of time polishing or tinkering with his cars or watching sports including U of M football. He will be remembered for his strength and positive outlook through numerous battles with his health over the years. Ed will be greatly missed for his outgoing personality, ability to make friends with anyone, and his love for his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Lois Takens; nephew, Johnny McSorley; and many aunts and uncles. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Josh (Alicia) Takens, Alison (Austin) Westhuis, Whitney (Joe) Ritsema; grandchildren, Ayla Braun, Kolsyn Stacy, Porter and Malia Westhuis, Brynley and Grady Ritsema; sister, Joy (Randy) McSorley; and niece, Christina McSorley. Funeral service will be held on Friday, August 4, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW with Pastor Bob Bloom officiating. Relatives and friends may meet the family Thursday, August 3, from 5-8 p.m. and Friday from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Right to Life of Michigan.

Leave Your Tribute Message

We are sorry to hear of Ed’s passing. We enjoyed riding bikes with him, as well as being his neighbor. He was a warm and generous person. He always had a smile (or a wave from him bike) when we saw him. I hope that your precious memories of him will fill your heart. Continued prayers….

Josh, Alison, and Whitney: I have known your father since Jr. High, played hundreds of baseball, softball, and basketball games with him, ridden horses together in a parade, watched our cars be driven in Homecoming Game halftimes, attend Tigers games, etc., and all of these highlights paled in comparison to everything you kids ever did! All dads love their children but few can compare to the pride and love that your dad had for you! Over the years, grandkids joined the family and your dad became even more proud! I have nothing but empathy for all of you but would ask that you include gratitude with your sadness! Your dad often told me: they own me! I never doubted it! Laurie, thank you for a wonderful gracious tribute! 😇❤️

I started working at transportation as Ed’s aide on 03-33 in 2019. Ed always had a smile on his face and was nice to everyone. #333 won’t be the same. Rest in peace. -Katelyn Homrich

I worked at the bus garage with Ed for several years. He was always so nice to everyone, Always a smile on his face. Going to miss his voice coming over the radio saying 333. Only Ed can say it the way he did. He was a great guy and will be greatly missed for sure. Heaven gained a great angel. Rest in peace Ed.

I had the privilege of working with Ed the last 2 years for Jenison transportation. He always had a big smile, a story, and the best bus waves. #333 won't be the same without him and he will be greatly missed.
