He served for three years in the U.S. Coast Guard as a radio man during the Korean Conflict, then graduated from Calvin College and the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He took time out of his Hudsonville dental practice to serve as a short-term missionary dentist in Nigeria in the early years. In retirement, he served as a dentist at a refugee camp on the Thai-Cambodian border and to crew members on various cruise ships. He was instrumental in forming the Luke Society of Christian physicians and dentists, as well as the Christian Reformed Layman’s League which founded Project Thank You that sent “thank you packets” to American soldiers serving in Vietnam. He and Jane worked with Bethany Christian Services to bring Korean orphans to their adoptive families and he authored several books on Christianity and evangelism. His family is grateful that he enjoyed his bus rides with Carl to and from the Day Center of Evergreen in Holland where the staff was so supportive and loving. A private graveside service will be held at Forest Grove Cemetery. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Luke Society, 3409 S. Gateway Blvd., Sioux Falls, SD 57106 or donate on-line at lukesociety.org.
