Douglas Miedema

April 23, 1958 ~
December 30, 2024

Douglas Edward Miedema, age 66, of Wyoming, joined his Heavenly Father on Monday, December 30, 2024, surrounded by family. Doug was born and raised in Wyoming, graduated from Calvin Christian High School, and spent his career working in the Fire Protection trade for different companies, including Brigade Fire Protection and the Local 669 Union.

Faith, family and friendship are the three best words to describe Doug. He had a zest for life that is hard to describe in just words, but something you would instantly get within the first minutes of meeting him. He was an avid fisherman, having visited Alaska, and known best for showing no mercy behind the wheel of his speed boat for anyone who dared tube the lake under his watch. Doug always made it a point to introduce his better half as his “beautiful wife” whom he was lucky to have. Joy encompassed his heart as a proud papa to three granddaughters and two brand new twin grandsons.

Doug’s friends will remember him for his love to host get-togethers at White Fish Lake, his willingness to help others in need and always being up to chat over a cold beer at Happy Hour. And of course, his eagerness to always give you his unfiltered opinion.

Doug’s family will remember him for his fly by the seat of his pants attitude, big heart, timeless fashion sense and always knowing a better way to do something, whether it was insisting on taking the back roads somewhere, or getting a better deal on anything – a car, a boat, a trailer, you name it – and of course, his genuine inability to remember a password, use Bluetooth or operate any technology.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Janice; and brother, Daniel Miedema. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 38 years, Tammy; his children, Samantha (Mike) Samuels and Justin (Stephanie) Miedema; granddaughters, Presley, Isla, and Stevie; grandsons, Corbin and Eli; father, Donald Miedema; and siblings, Scott Miedema and Debra Rottschafer.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 8, at 11 a.m. at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW with Pastor Joe Robbe officiating. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, January 7, from 4-7 p.m. and Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to The American Cancer Society

I am the younger sister of Glen Blackport. I have such great memories of Doug hanging around Glen when we were younger. He was always the "cool" friend. When I was a senior in high school, Doug let me borrow his Grand Prix for a few days. I was so excited to have a car to drive. Never mind the fact that is cost me $10 to drive to and from school! As time passed, I didn't have contact with Doug anymore until Glen was sick. I will never forget how he took care of Glen and was the best friend he could ever ask for. My heart breaks for you in your loss, but I hope the wonderful memories you have and also knowing that Doug is in heaven, will bring some comfort.

Tammy we are so very sorry to hear of Doug's passing. Always seeing him out walking the dog. I know Kyle has great memories going with Justin up to the cottage. Always coming home talking about Justin's dad's cooking. So sorry Justin for your loss. Think about you all the time. Prayers for you all.

They definitely threw away the "mold" when God made you Doug! My prayer is that you and my brother Glen are together and just as close in heavenas you were here on earth. Thanks for being such a great friend!!

It's an honor and a privilege to love someone so deeply that saying goodbye feels impossible. This man's love for his family was evident even to those he'd never met, and I know his loss will be difficult to heal. Our prayers abound for the Miedema family during this difficult time.

Ken and I loved Doug, Tammy and family at the lake every year. We always knew he was there. We could hear him, enjoyed his cooking, his visits and always expressing his love. It won't be the same without him. A piece of my heart is broken from his loss. He was one of a kind and Tammy and him raised fantastic kids to carry on his legacy. R.I.P. dear man. Ken will certainly be welcoming him in heaven.

Doug was one of the most energetic, fun, and interesting people I ever met. I’ll miss the conversations with him. The jokes. Catching up after not seeing each other. He was a one of a kind person and will be forever missed. Sending love and thoughts out to everyone who knew and loved Doug from the VanWyck family.
