Remembering Douglas Halloran
Douglas James Halloran, age 82, of Dorr, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, October 10, 2026. He was born June 15, 1944, to Allan and Ruth (Hildenbrand) Halloran of Wayland. The oldest of ten children, Doug grew up on the family dairy farm where he learned the true meaning of hard work. He graduated from Wayland High School in 1962. After high school, he began his 36 year career at General Motors, starting out as an apprentice and eventually earning his journeyman’s card as a Tool & Die machinist. He had a natural talent for figuring out how things worked and how to make or fix just about anything. If you needed something done everyone knew that Doug was the go-to man.
He has always had a love for fast cars and in true Doug fashion, was always up for a race. Being the firstborn apparently instilled in him the need to always BE first, whether it was racing cars or snowmobiles, competing in some made-up game, or being first in the food line during family gatherings.
In 1966, Doug married Marcia (DeVries) after winning her heart, as well as the drag race they won on their first date. In 1970, as their family grew, they purchased Marcia’s family home in Dorr where they raised their four children. His hard work ethic carried into his home life where he had a small machining business on the side and also tended to his own small farm, where he raised beef cattle and farmed the land for many years. Despite his busy lifestyle, he always had time for his family and lots of recreational activities with his friends. Their annual family vacations were epic. In the early years they alternated trips between Mackinac Island and Cedar Point. Later those trips expanded to several weeks at a time to explore different parts of the U.S. in the family motorhome.
Already a devoted family man and father, Doug reached new levels when he became a grandpa; his grandchildren were his entire world. He could turn anything into a game or contest that kept them entertained for hours and he was entirely hands-on, participating in the silliness.
Doug discovered a passion for collecting and restoring antiques. After he retired from GM, what started out as a small side hobby became a big part of who he was and what he became known for in his community, as well as the more widespread antiquing community. His large collection of vintage gas pumps, Cushman scooters, pedal cars and tractors, classic cars and many more unique items grew to the point where he had a special garage built to house his findings. There he would work to restore them back to a pristine condition and display them throughout. People were constantly stopping in to tour his “museum”, and his favorite thing was to share stories about what he had, where they came from and how they worked.
As if collecting didn’t keep him busy enough, he decided to get his CDL and drive truck for his good friends at Stallard & Sons Asphalt and later Schaendorf Farms. He loved both of his post-retirement jobs and the people he worked with.
Once he was truly done with the outside workforce, Doug enjoyed traveling to antique shows, golfing with his brothers and friends, playing with his grandkids, tinkering in his garage, mowing his lawn in perfect straight lines, and most of all, “goofin’ off”.
Doug will be greatly missed but fondly remembered for his hard work, creative and mechanical talent, his quick wit, fun personality, and love of family. We are forever grateful for the laughter he brought to family gatherings, the silly stories, and the countless memories he created with those he loved. We take great comfort in knowing that his spirit and memory lives on in the hearts of his family and friends.
After a long, hard fought battle with Parkinson’s, his body and mind are finally at peace and he is cruising the Heavens.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Marcia Halloran; children: Brandon Halloran (Greg Mann), Dana (Mik) Opatik, Shawn (Mike) Kozlowski, Shannon (Jody) Dykstra; grandchildren: Sydney (Grant) Stevens, Jesse (fiancée, Kaylee Spencer) Dykstra, Ryley Dykstra; great-grandchildren: Lucy and Layna Stevens; siblings: Dean (Sandy) Halloran, Kathy Halloran, JoAnn Pierce, Wayne (Joan) Halloran, Colleen Norton, Paul (Geri) Halloran, Mic (Barb) Halloran, Bill (Sue) Halloran; sisters and brother-in-law: Pat (Dave) Allen, Sharon Spielmaker, Dee DeVries and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Allan and Ruth Halloran; sister, Eileen Baweja; brothers-in-law: Jack DeVries, Paul Spielmaker.
A Celebration of Doug’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at MKD Funeral Home, 2371 Riley St., Hudsonville, with family friend Charles Walker (Doug’s “favorite pastor”) leading the Celebration.
