January 29, 2026

Douglas “Doug” Damon Gratz, age 64, of Hudsonville, Michigan, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and dear friends, after a brave 17-month battle with cancer.

Douglas was born on December 27, 1961, in Livonia, Michigan, the youngest of seven children born to Edward and Virginia Gratz. He was raised on the family farm in Fowlerville, Michigan, and graduated from Fowlerville High School in 1980.

Doug is survived by his love and lifelong companion, Marianne “Mary” Thoms, of Hudsonville, Michigan, with whom he shared 27 wonderful years together. He is also survived by Mary’s children, Sarah Thoms (Mike Cooper) of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Dylan Dreyer (Jaclyn) of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and Mary’s grandchildren, Zoe, Liam, Odin, Ari, Noah, and Sylvie, who Doug cared for dearly. He also leaves behind his treasured family, including his siblings: Clifford Gratz of Fowlerville, Michigan; Linda Gratz of Skibby, Denmark; Donna Gratz of Florida; Christine Elder of Florence, Kentucky; and Karen Reske of Stockbridge, Michigan; his nieces, Carla, Kristy, Kelly, Jessika, and Ashley; his nephews, Matthew and Gregory; three great-nephews and two great-nieces; along with many extended family members and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Rebecca Marovich; his mother, Virginia Gratz; his father, Edward Gratz; and his grandmother, Elena Graure.

Doug attended two years at the Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music. He became a Christian at a young age and carried a deep love for the Lord throughout his life. He was a devoted member of Wellspring Church in Hudsonville, where he built many meaningful friendships.

Doug owned and operated a successful tool and die business, Diamond Tool, in Hudsonville, for 35 years. He was known for his strong work ethic, his dedication to quality craftsmanship, and the lasting relationships he built through his work.

Doug enjoyed many hobbies, including salmon fishing on Lake Michigan, fishing at the family pond his father had dug, cooking and hosting family barbecues, water skiing, running, reading, and studying the Bible. He especially cherished gardening with Marianne, growing flowers and vegetables, and spending time canning side by side.

Doug was blessed with wonderful neighbors who were always ready to lend a hand, stop by with food, or share a story. Their kindness and friendship meant the world to him.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 3, at Wellspring Church, 4466 Bauer Rd., Hudsonville, with Pastor Steve Gibson officiating. The burial will take place at Blendon Township Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Tuesday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service.
