Doris Schaefer

Doris Marie (Armitage) Schaefer, age 89, of Jenison, formerly of Newaygo, stepped into heaven on Monday, March 8, 2021. She grew up in Coral, Michigan, and graduated from Michigan State University. Doris lived in Sparta among the apple trees and then moved to Pickerel Lake in Newaygo. She married Caryl Schaefer and together they enjoyed traveling, flying in their airplane, fiddler jamborees, and antique tractor shows. Doris taught preschool and kindergarten for many years at Newaygo Public Schools. She had the spirit of hospitality and was kind hearted. Doris adored her friends at the lake and countless pontoon rides. After many years on the lake, she was blessed to find a new home at Waterford Place in Jenison, where she lived since 2012. At Waterford, Doris enjoyed many wonderful friendships, a caring staff and nightly card games. She was preceded in death by her husband Caryl. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Cheryl and Steve Scheer, Cindy and Tom Grodus, Jim and Jill Schaefer; grandchildren, Chris and Angel Scheer, Ross and Alison Scheer, Sara and Bryan Cook, Carlye and Albie Bartolomeo, Emily and Jim Krueger, Krista and Campbell Ricci, Matthew Grodus, Erik Grodus, Alyssa Schaefer, Kristin Schaefer, Madison Schaefer, and Samuel Schaefer; 13 great-grandchildren all under the age of ten; sister, Helen and Robert Ward; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 12, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Resurrection Life Church, 5100 Ivanrest Ave. SW, Grandville. Please enter through doors E or H. A burial will take place at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Conklin at a later date. Relatives and friends may meet the family Friday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Edward T. Grodus Scholarship Fund helping Newaygo High School graduates further their education.
