Donald Dean Ickes

Donald D. Ickes, age 91, of Grand Rapids, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, January 20, 2024. Don was a warm, caring, loving husband, father, grandfather, great and great great grandfather. Don worked for 46 years for Oven Fresh bakery and then 8 years at D & W after retirement. He was born at home in Nunica, MI. Don was an avid walker and even walked frequently while in assisted living. He also enjoyed playing golf in his younger years. Don was an avid reader and lifelong Tigers fan. He especially loved his family. One of the residents remarked upon learning of Don’s passing; “He was so nice.” He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Marilyn Ickes; his daughter, Susan Wheeler. He will be dearly missed by his children: MaryAnn Browley, Linda Sova, Stephen and Margaret Ickes, Angela and Don Konen, Paul and Teri Ickes, Teresa Ickes, Barbara and Mark Nitzel, Amy and Jim Lillard, Phil Vanderbilt; 21 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; nine siblings, with only two sisters surviving; several nieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on Friday, February 2, at St. John Vianney Church, 4101 Clyde Park Ave SW, Wyoming, with Rev. John Vallier officiating. Relatives and friends may meet the family from 10 to 11 am at church. Burial at Resurrection Cemetery. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to St. John Vianney Educational Foundation.
