Dewey Lee Thompson, Sr., of Allendale, passed away peacefully from his earthly life at his home and entered into eternal life in heaven on January 11, 2023. Dewey was born in Tawas, Michigan to Clair and Eileen Thompson on November 16, 1932. He grew up in the Tawas area and excelled in basketball and baseball before graduating as Salutatorian from East Tawas High School. He moved to the Muskegon area where he met the love of his life, Nelda Helmus. After serving in the Army in Austria during the Korean War, he returned to marry her on April 22, 1955; they later celebrated the blessings of five sons. Dewey was an electrical engineer for many years in the Muskegon and Grand Haven areas. He loved spending time hunting, fishing, woodworking, enjoying many wonderful days in White Cloud with family, and restoring Broncos and tractors. Dewey was a loving and giving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather as well as a wonderful friend who will be deeply missed by all. Dewey was preceded in death by two sons, Tim and Christopher Thompson; a grandson, Andrew Thompson; and brother, Dick Thompson. He will be lovingly remembered by those who survive him, including his wife of 68 years, Nelda; his sons, Dewey Jr. (Deb) Thompson, Greg (Margaret) Thompson, Phil (Kerry) Thompson; 11 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. A memorial service honoring Dewey will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Allendale) 6651 Scott St. with Faith Hospice Chaplain David Braak officiating. Relatives and friends may meet the family from 12-1 pm prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial Allendale Township Cemetery at a later date.
