Remembering Despina Aliki Couturier

Despina Couturier, born March 11, 1957, in Athens, Greece, passed away on May 19, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Her life was defined by devotion—to her Greek heritage, to her work, and above all, to the people she cherished.

Despina met the love of her life, Bruce Couturier, while he was stationed in Greece with the U.S. Navy. Their connection was immediate and enduring. Together they built a life rooted in partnership, resilience, and joy. They raised four children and celebrated 49 years of marriage on November 11, 2025—a testament to their unwavering bond.

Despina was known throughout her community for her generosity, warmth, and tireless work ethic. When LongHorn Steakhouse opened in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on April 5, 2005, she played a key role in launching the restaurant and became a beloved presence there for two decades. She retired on May 22, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of mentorship and friendship. To many coworkers, she wasn’t just a colleague—she was “Momma.” She trained countless team members with patience, humor, and a deep sense of pride.

At home, Despina was the heart of every gathering. She was known for preparing abundant, delicious meals and welcoming family and friends to her table. Her happiest moments were spent surrounded by loved ones, sharing stories, laughter, and food made with love. Her loyal dog, Angel, remained faithfully by her side, offering companionship and comfort throughout the years.

Despina is survived by her devoted husband, Bruce; and their children: Joseph (Valerie) Couturier, Liza (Eric) Libiran, Paul (Crystal) Couturier, and Bruce (Leslie) Couturier. She leaves behind her treasured grandchildren: Caila, Charlene, Dominic, Christopher, Chloe, Despina, and Nikos. She is also survived by her mother, Evagalia Risafi; her brother, Dimitri Kariabas; and her beloved dog, Angel.

She is preceded in death by her father, Efthimios Kariabas; her sister, Adela Manti; and her dear friend, Kathy Voshel, whose memory she carried close to her heart.

Despina’s life was a beautiful blend of strength, compassion, and generosity. Her legacy lives in the family she nurtured, the friends she embraced, and the countless lives she touched. In honor of her memory, Despina requested that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, supporting children fighting cancer—a cause especially close to her heart as she bravely fought cancer herself for nearly six years.

A memorial service will be held 11 am on Saturday, May 30 at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4646 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, Kentwood with Rev. Dennis Gilbert officiating. A private family burial will be at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family on Saturday from 10-11 am prior to the service at the funeral home. There will be a luncheon to follow the service.

I worked with Aliki for nearly 10 years, and even though we didn’t see much of each other towards the end of my time there, seeing her was always a welcome sight. She was always kind and positive towards me, and that’s something I will always carry with me. To her family, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

— Andrew Shah
