Delbert Franklin Wood

July 25, 1930 ~
April 26, 2025

Delbert Franklin Wood, age 94, of Wyoming was called home by his Heavenly Father, surrounded by his family on Saturday, April 26, 2025.  He was born July 25, 1930 in Puxico, Missouri to the late Oscar and Ola Wood.  Del joined the Navy and was a gunner’s mate on the USS NEW and served during the Korean War.  While he was in the service, he continued his love for his high school sweetheart, the former Johanna Konyndyk. They married in Norfolk, VA. and celebrated over 64 years of marriage.  She predeceased him in 2018.  When returning from the service, he purchased a boxed truck and started his own company delivering furniture for area furniture stores.  Years later, he started to deliver office supplies to various businesses in the Grand Rapids area until his retirement in 2006 where he worked a combined total of over 52 years.

Del was an avid baseball player where he won a championship for the Navy in Norfolk, VA, pitching several no hitters. He has always been an avid Tiger and White Caps fan.  The White Caps team gave him his own seat with his name tag on the back.  Del truly had a passion for playing horseshoes as well.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Kurth; sisters, Ernestine (Chick) and Lee Jones, Patricia and John Ring; brothers, Elmer Wood, Terry Wood; brother-in-law, Don Abbott.

He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Gail and Doug Bailey; 5 grandchildren, Stanley (Danielle) Razmus, Joseph Razmus, Craig Razmus, Carrie (Ben) Shoemaker, Callie Bailey; 9 great grandchildren; sister, Joyce Abbott; sister-in-law, Chata Wood; nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and a private graveside service with military honors will be held at Fairplains Cemetery.  The family would like to thank the special care that Del received from Wyoming Woods, Corewell Hospice and the Veteran’s Association of Michigan for the wonderful care he received. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Corewell Health Hospice or the Kent County Honor Guard (KCVHG, P.O. Box 140506, Grand Rapids, MI 49514)
