David Gene Mate

November 20, 1949 ~
October 28, 2025

David Gene Mate, age 75, of Grand Rapids, passed gently in his sleep on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Freda; siblings: Kathleen, Sheron, and Richard.

He will be lovingly remembered by his daughters: Dana Mate Dones and Russell Mate Dones, Mallory Mate-Faasse and Jason Faasse; and their mother, Ruth (Ryan) Walter; grandchildren: Adeline Jo, Evelia Louise, Norah Jo, Maxwell David, and Harper Evelyn; brother, James Mate; brother-in-law, David Bush; best friends, Bryan and Karen Ergang; and his very beloved nieces whom he adored and nephews who he mostly liked.

Dave began his life as the youngest of 5 Mate children, to an outspoken mob of incredible people, known through the neighborhood for their generosity of heart and home. He was a true product of a loving, well-fed family, and a mother that doted on her children, especially her baby. Dave would be the first to call himself a mama's boy (with absolute pride) and did through his whole life. Dave loved to brag about his strong mother, and gave her credit for his being drawn to strong women.

After graduating from Lee High School with his lifelong best friend Bryan, Dave was drafted to the US Army and served in the Vietnam War. Dave was an infantryman in the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles" Division. His time there earned him a Bronze Star, the nickname Harpo, and a lifetime of PTSD. It was the PTSD, and support from Bryan, that made Dave an advocate for mental health services and his group of friends at the Vet Center.

He carried the service mentality throughout his life; proudly managing the warehouse at Classic Stereo; exemplifying a life of volunteerism for his family to the causes and charities important to him; and serving as a lector, Eucharistic minister, athletic director and coach at his home church, Holy Name of Jesus.

Dave’s greatest service, though, rested in his role as a father. He was the most proud of his daughters, and he said it to everyone within earshot. Dave never missed an opportunity to play catch with his daughters growing up, never missed a single game or performance and loudly told everyone that having daughters was the greatest gift a person could have. As much as he was proud of his girls, he was just as proud of his five grandchildren, each of whom he adored for their unique bond.

Dave’s profound love for his family was exemplified by his mission to be father to those who needed the support of a “good dad.” Aside from buying any candy bar, girl scout cookie, or any other charity in which to donate, Dave never turned down a chance to help someone out, doing so often anonymously.

Dave was fortunate to live his legacy and see his children and grandchildren grow up happy, healthy, and loved. This was his life’s work and an achievement he prized above all others. He will be missed dearly.

Memorial services will be held 11 am Thursday, November 6th at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4646 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, Kentwood, with Rev. Steve Dudek officiating, with a luncheon to follow. Relatives and friends may meet the family Thursday from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home before the service. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Mitten Foundation

Dave was a wonderful coworker, but his proudest achievement was always his daughters and family. May he rest in peace.
