Daniel Joseph McCarthy

Daniel McCarthy, age 81, of Grand Rapids passed away Thursday, September 22, 2022, looking forward to being reunited with his life partner and wife, Valerie. Dan had grieved for Valerie since her passing. They enjoyed a long life filled with golf, travel, love, laughter, and family.

Dan loved God, country, and Notre Dame. He was raised as a devoted catholic. He served his country faithfully as a Naval Officer, Grand Rapids Police Officer, and Federal Protective Serviceman. His only other competing devotion was his beloved Fighting Irish. He was a faithful fan of Notre Dame all the way through his last days. Go Irish!

Dan was preceded in death by his love and wife, Valerie (DeVoogd) McCarthy; his parents, Irene and John F. McCarthy II; his siblings and their spouses, John F. McCarthy III, Kathleen “Kay” (William) Palma, Patricia (“Swede” Warren) Nilsen, Rory (Dorothy) McCarthy, Thomas (Dorothy) McCarthy, Timothy McCarthy; nephews, Bill Palma, Casey Nilsen; stepchildren, Susie Lasko, Jodi (Lasko) Corner, Doug DeVoogd. Dan will be lovingly remembered and missed by his sister, Maureen (Joseph) Goeldel; sister-in-law, Geraldine McCarthy; his stepchildren, Scott (Dottie) Lasko, Gary (Eva) DeVoogd, Valerie (Jerry) Latimer, Sheryl Devoogd, Daniel (Katie Cox) DeVoogd; his niece, Maureen (Matthew) VanGessel; his caregiver and grandson, Mike (Lori) Lasko; and many more.

A celebration of life will take place on Friday, October 7th, 2022, at MKD Stegenga Funeral Chapel, 1601 Post Drive NE, Belmont. The Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 PM with Father Chung Tran officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at the funeral home. A luncheon will follow the service. All are welcome.
